I just registered to this site and read the newbie section and all that long stuff, I didnt know much about RX-7's before reading that, but I wanted to find out info before I buy one that im interested.

The car they are selling me is an 93 Touring. The guy just told me that the turbos only spool to 6lbs because of a vacuum leak somewhere and that they need probably some hoses or rubber to fix the leak. I just read in this forum that stock RX-7 runs at about 10 psi (correct me if im wrong).

I just want to know if what hes telling me can be repaired easily, and what I would need to do to able to run like a normal stock RX-7, I dont care about modifications and stuff, I just like the orinigal stock settings.

It's true - that it probably doesn't cost a lot to fix, if you do it yourself. But it isn't necessarily going to be fast.

However, the basic troubleshooting you can probably do right there. There are rubber couplers between the turbos and intercooler, and intercooler and intake elbow. Mine are held on by worm drive clamps, so with a screwdriver I can remove the clamps and take off the couplers. Others I've seen might have spring clamps. Anyway, remove those couplers, starting with the one closest to the turbos, and turn it inside-out, looking for small tears. Especially look in places where a clamp might have pinched into the coupler.

If you find such a tear, replace it and the problem is usually fixed.

thanks for that Dave. I want to let you know the details of the car they are selling me, and probably you can tell me if its a good deal or not. Its a 93' Touring model with 135,000 miles it has a new motor though but don't know exactly how many miles it has, and has a salvage title thats the bad part. The car got repaired painted and stuff and everything works fine from my understanding, the turbos, the tranny, the motor works good except for the leak in the turbos.
Hes selling it for $7,500. what do you think?

 

Get it thoroughly inspected by a very good collision / frame shop. Get a compression test done, too. It could be a decent car for $7500, but you need to know exactly what the salvage is from, and have a pro (not the seller, or sellers repair guy) tell you what that entails.

Agreed, you definately need a pro to check it out. He could be selling you an ok FD with some normal FD issues, or a real lemon that will need some serious work.
