turbo glowing with street port motor.

sorry for the double post.
some times forum just stops responding.

BTW after I installed street ported motor my turbo glows
even after very easy driving.
my down pipe is not rally red like turbo exhaust side so I guess it's not my cat.

I searched but i couldn't get straight answer looks like it's some what normal.
should be worried?

thanks.

Man,

My FC does the exact same thing. I get a mild glow after normal driving, but when I really get on it, I get bright cherry red glow from the hot side of the turbine. I noticed it first because I did a really high speed run, and I was on the brakes pretty hard. I could see smoke coming from my drivers side (right) mirror. I got out, and its actually coming from the engine bay, being blown to the rear by my perma-cool elec fan. I pop the hood and its like a lava lamp effect from the turbine. I have a hollowed out cat, and a japanese stock downpipe which doesnt have any cats in it. and it runs REAL rich. I figured it was doing that cuz it was running too rich. Coolant temps verified by my breddy temp guage read 80C the whole time....just my input on that..

Yep, I get that cool glow too. Only noticable at night when looking with no light. I get this almost EVERY time I drive, especially when I've done some part throttle cruising. I spoke to Bryan at BNR, he said they all do this. I've measured the temp of a glowing turbo, around 450C!! So now I cool it in stages using my fan mod. Let the engine temp come up to about 200F, then cool it to 177F, then let it climb to 200, then cool it again. Typically, after three cycles, I can't see the turbo housings in the dark anymore "Strong" glow may take up to 5 cycles.

My pre-cats are gone, BTW, and the main cat is fine. This is just how the beast operates. It is also the source of coolant gurgling after shutoff (thus the AST!) and heatsoak (up to 225F!). Cycling the temps brings my heatsoak to, umm.. 185F at most.

The glow is because your running too rich, if you have performance loss then it's a clogged CAT
