thanks again for the responses

I haven't checked the IAC, going have to look that up for its location, didn't check the TPS, but will

I believe the order of events is this;;the high idle was first...was taken to tech to find out why...stated the turbos needed replacing...as I was attempting to resolve the high idle issue I noticed the turbo and dp glowing...

this is a HKS dp (I believe mild steel)...just put on ...believing I had a clogged precat

within a few minutes from start up the turbo begins to glow...a few minutes later the dp glows too..probably about 5 minutes for both to glow

I am running into the same problem, The DP is glowing after only a few mins of Idling.
I am leaning more towards a clogged main cat withne though.
I am going to be checking the car out tomarrow so if I run across anything I will let you know.

if you doubt the main cat then take it off and run the car see if it glows

Any updates on this? I just noticed I have a similer problem.

Car info:
Stock everything(+boost gauge), 76Kmiles, '94 MB Touring.
owned for 6 months.
Always has had a slightly high idle(~1400).
When warm, at ~1400, has a 20in vacume at idle.
boost looks like 10-7-9, but sometimes a great 10-8-10 on cool days/nights.

symptoms:
During the summer I started it 2-3 times a week, no smoke ever.
Never looked nor noticed glowing turbo/pre-cat

Storing it at a friends garage.
I had left it for 2 weeks before this last week, and when it started up it smoked for about a minute then cleared up. Thought little of it.

Left it for one more week.
Went to start it today(sunday night).
Starts fine.
At first(~30-45 seconds), absolutely no smoke/visible exhaust(though I could feel some coming out), which I was a little surprised at since it smoked for a minute last time.
Then it started to smoke like last time.
Cleared up in about 2 minutes.
Left it running, popped the hood, looked and saw both the pre-cat and just a wee little bit of the front turbo housing glowing.

So I shut it down and searched here.

I have a downpipe ready for install.
The delay in the smoke/exhaust made me think something is clogged.
I've never noticed the pre-cat/turbo glow before, but never looked when it was dark.

I'm going to go start it again tomorrow and look underneath at the main cat.

Here is an update: The glowing turbo problem has been solved, thanks to fellow forum member Benjamin.

He discovered the check valve from the pressure chamber was broken. This was replaced and the turbos no longer glow.

Still working on the high idle issue.

without an electrical load the idle is still around 2,000

do you guys think that fixing the idle problem will eliminate the glowing turbo and downpipe
I have the same problems that you have... but my idling is steddy att 6-800 rpm .

I dont think idling at 2000 rpm is the main problem to make your turbos glowing .

Does th turbo spin freely?? Verify they both have little to no resistance when turnning the shafts. I can see idling above 2000 rpms causing a glowing manifold... but only on one turbo seems odd...

If they spin than you know its not that... who knows, a frozen turbo might do some weird things to your idle
