Turbo Blues
Hello all,
I have a '94 RX7 PEP. I had an oil leak on my secondary turbo and a slight leak on the primary so I decided to pull them out today in the hope of rebuilding them with a turbo city kit. My RX has 32k miles and I figured they would be in reasonable shape. After inspected them I counted 12 exhaust flange cracks!! Some as long as a 1/2 inch, I bought the car with 29.5 k miles and have spent my time changing intercoolers, hose job, computer, oil sending unit, brakes and rotors, clutch and aluminum flywheel, fuel filter, cold air intake, down pipe, tail gate lift cylinders, and I cannot remember the rest. It already had 18" wheels, radiator, pulleys, stainless brake lines, exhaust and other things. I had a '93 8 yrs ago and recently sold a Mag Red y2k C5. I'm 44 yrs old and do not know how you younger folks can afford the RX. Its wonderful to drive but appears to be a "flash bug" with respect to maintenance. I guess I am just alittle down on her tonight with all the work I've done and more to go. Monday I will checking out my options on turbos and as I told my wife, I guess this is my Christmas to me!
Take Care all and Merry Christmas to all,
André

Well, you know what they say... When something breaks, upgrade! Maybe high-flow twins? Or perhaps the turbo city kit will work. Let us know how that goes. Sounds like your building a nice 7 though, so keep it up!
Anyone know how/why the turbos develop cracks? Heat, wear and tear? I would have thought 32K mile turbos would have been ok.

It is caused by the constant expansion/contraction of the metal from warming up and cooling down especially if you live somplace that is cold...
Order a single turbo header from south florida performance at 1-305-233-8520.. it costs around $475 with shipping it is made out of soft mandral steel and it won't crack.
Do NOT get a stainless steel manifold, sure it will look pretty, but the heating and cooling will crack the welds and you will be pulling your turbo every 3 to 6 months to be rewelded.
