Trying to fix EGR valve for emissions
Trying to fix EGR valve for emissions
A few weeks ago I decided to finally fix my EGR valve as it is time for me to pass emissions (the CEL comes on and you can't pass visual inspection in CA with the CEL on).
Upon removing it I found that the gasket was clogged with carbon, which is a common reason for the EGR to stop functioning properly. While I had the valve out I cleaned it out and tested it with a vacuum pump to make sure it was functioning properly. I also checked the sensor to the ecu that tells it whether or not it's working (I have a 94) and both of these checked out.
The car ran great for a few days with no CEL, and just recently the light started to come on again. The only thing I can think of is it could be the solenoid. I just thought it made sense when I saw the clogged gasket and figured that was the culprit.
Does anyone else have any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

that CEL, assuming it's code '16,' is the EGR switch: it's this sensor that causes a check engine light when it doesn't detect the EGR valve opening and closing. This sensor tends to fail from heat. Many people simply block the EGR and insert a relay to fool the switch into thinking the EGR is still working properly.
If your EGR is working properly (verify this with a vacuum test procedure), you might be OK just bypassing the switch. More info here:
