trying to find out whats causing a wierd clunking noise...

there is a strange sorta metallic clunking coming from the rear of the car when i go over bumps. i had blown shocks which i just replaced last night and its still making the noise. it will only make the noise going forward over a bump whether its in gear or not, while going in reverse there is no clunking when going over bumps. any clues as to what this would be, the next thing i was thinking of replacing and seeing if it helps was the differential mounts or the suspension bushings.

depending on your mileage, i would guess its the suspension bushings, it seems to be a common problem among the fds. try jouncing the car while its parked and you might be able to hear it as well. i know mine are toast just need to get around to replacing them. check out the unobtanium bushing sets in the for sale section, i believe there are a few sets for sale there. Even w/ 80k i would recommend replacing the bushings even if that clunking isnt the suspension. good luck

I had the same problem. Fixed it by getting new trailing arms. I hear its a common problem.

i think the trailing arms are the problem. i had just been talking to my mechanic friend and he was just saying that there was a good chance the trailing arms were the problem. so thats the next thing im gonna try thanks!
