Question Tried a hard 2nd shift for the first time... not good

Last night I went to a desolated street to try an acceleration run just to get a feel of the car. Well, after a rolling start in 1st gear I tried a fast shift to second without letting the gas out, maybe my stock clutch is not up to the task or maybe my second gear synchro is tired but I got a BAD grind into second and massive wheel hop. I let go of the gas and tried again just normal smooth shifting and it went in ok. 2nd gear have never been too smooth until the tranny is well warmed up but it never grinded before. 5th gear doesn't like fast shifts either, but careful smooth shifts work perfectly.

I have an aftermarket warranty so maybe it's time for 2nd and 5th gear rebuild? Or maybe my clutch is getting old? Maybe I need to learn how to shift? Opinions?

you have to make sure your timing is perfect when you shift is one is off by a little bit that is what you will get...grind...

I dont know about the 2nd gear problem, but you shouldnt be trying to shift fast into 5th gear any way. That is the first syncro to go and there is no reason to abuse it.
For the 2nd gear, maybe you didnt get the clutch all the way down on time, maybe the pressure plate is getting old, maybe there is air in the clutch line, who knows. There are alot of things to look at there. You should let the gas out a bit any way, you dont want to end up over revving the motor if you miss the shift.

unless you have $2500 laying around for a tranny rebuild, stop abusing your tranny.

there is no need to do a fast shift to 5th unless you are a mad crazy shifting ricer yo.

as for 2nd gear, they can be slow with age and slamming it like you did ain't good. change the tranny fluid to some Redline MT90 as that should help somewhat and you are probably overdue anyway. See if you have any metal flakes in the tranny oil when you change it.

That's happened to me before a couple of times. I think it happens to all of us from time to time. The guys above all have some good suggestions. In my case and probably others there is the issue of the hand being quicker than the foot. Make sure the clutch is enaged enough before you shift. I know it sounds elementary but it's worked for me. Also there is the side to side movement of the engine at high rpms which can cause mis-shifts because of the tranny moving around. Checking the motor mounts and/or installing a torque brace (I'm doing this) will help too.

I have tough time hitting third under fast shifts. I tend to miss it if I don't take the time to hit is just right.

I think that is most of my problem.

The amount of time saved and acceleration gained by shifting this way is absolutely miniscule, especially compared to the major abuse to the transmission and differential that results. The FD is not built nor was ever intended to be used for dragracing.

If you have a warranty then most definitely use it and get new syncros put in if its free. I would abuse the hell out of that warranty if I had one.
