Well I think its about time I rebuilt or have it rebuilt. 5th scratchs hard, 3rd is tricky to get into at high speed and 1st wont go in unless the car is at a standstill. My whole odd gear range is worn out. How much does it usually cost to rebuild a transmission ( $Parts and $Labor ). Winter is the car down time so Ill have a lot of time to mess with it.

I got mine for 700 shipped. Bolted righ tup just fine but I am nto sure how good it is yet. Haven't really driven the FD above 10 mph yet this year haha. But the guy I got it from everyone here recommended him. I'd give you the name but I dont have it on me right now.

The JDM trannys have a lower 5th gear which means you turn more RPM in fifth. That may be a plus or a minus depending on what you want.

Rebuilding or used is the only option nowadays. I don't think Mazda has completely new trannys availalbe anymore.

The problem is that FD trannys usually have both worn shifting components and worn bearings. The bearings are usually reasonable to replace unless they are very worn, in which case you'll be set back an extrar $600 for a new input and main shaft.

The shifting components (synchros, gear dog teeth, clutch sleeve dog teeth) get very expensive. Many rebuilders put in new synchros because they are cheapest, but that doesn't entirely solve the problem and you can still get clunky shifts because of worn dog teeth. So if your 3rd gear dogs are pretty mashed up then the gear and clutch sleeve would need replaced for around $350 per gear.

The low mileage JDM trannys are a good option, but there is no guarantee it will be like new. Tranny wear and damage is almost entirely dependent on the driver and engine power, maybe more so than mileage. So keep that in mind - I suggest if you go the used tranny route that you immediately take it to a tranny shop and have them inspect things thru the lower cover plate. It will give them an idea of whether the gear dogs and synchros are in good or bad shape, which translates into shifting smoothness. They will be able to look at the tranny magnet and oil to get a rough idea of bearing condition. Most JDM trannys end up being a real deal compared to the cost of rebuilding to a similar condition, but there is not guarantee of it. The deal gets better if you consider they have the updated select spindle, stronger 5th synchro, and the changed 5th ratio. Hopefully you can work something out with the tranny importer to help ensure you don't get a lemon.

not if the syncros bad, it sucks i need one too theres one local for 400 i think he said it had 60k ? idk but i have alot more to do than put a tranny in the other gears work just fine jsut hope it dosnt break off and destroy my tranny.
