transmission rebuild (please help)

Okay guys, I really need your help. My fifth gear was grinding, so I took it in to the shop. Sure enough, the fifth gear synchro is gone. But instead of just fixing the synchro, they want to rebuild the whole tranny. They said that if they just fixed the synchro, all the other gears would start grinding soon. I am no expert on transmissions so I don't know if this is right or not. Also, they want about $1,700.00 to rebuild it and about a week in the shop. Is this right, or are they just blowing smoke? Please help me out, I am in dire straits. Thanks, Josh

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your help. Anyone else have suggestions? Perhaps a place in SoCal that will rebuild it?

I had my clutch/flywheel changed last month at Rotary Power in Gardena. My 5th gear synchro was gone, so while they had the tranny out, they took it to their tranny guy and he rebuilt my 5th gear. Cost was under $200 but they already had the tranny out for the clutch job. Call Jeff at Rotary Power and see what the cost will be.
