Exclamation Transmission problems..

So when I bought my car I knew of the trans grinding 5th gear problem and slight grind on 3rd. Few months later I hear a Chung Chung Chung Chung while the car is in neutral, 3 days later my 5th gear starts popping out on decel . So I come to a stop and I smell transmission fluid and I see a little bit of smoke coming from the driver side of the hood and a little from the trans tunnel .. Pretty light smoke but smelled like transmission oil in my case gear oil.. Then when I tried taking off 1st gear kept popping out. So every other try it would work. I got a quote for 1000 for a rebuild with 1yr warranty. Installation included... I know some of the problem is the synchros and throw out bearing.. But 1st gear popping out never experienced that b4..

Any ideas . What are the chances of it being low on oil and causing that.. And smoking on top of that.. Thanks.

I'd say pretty slim, sounds like a rebuild is in your future.

My transmission was doing exactly this. Popping out of 1st and 5th. Terrible noises coming from it also.

Fritz Flynn provided a better newer 94 transmission at a great price. Half of your quote for a rebuild. It solved my problems

You can get used low mileage JDM transmissions all day for $400. That transmission will be a nightmare in cost to rebuild, $1000 is VERY much on the low side. You probably have a lot of damaged parts.

Scrap it, get a good used trans, move on.

Biggest things on transmissions is mileage, most of the Japanese ones are 30-40,000 miles. I have one in my car, HUGE difference in smoothness when I swapped to it.

The 5th gear ratio is different, search on my user name for more info there. If you want the US ratio, now's the time to do it. But, it may not be big enough of a deal to worry about.

Ok so after searching I located a "low mileage" newer trans. Out of a newer fd. 99 if my mind serves me right.. Cost me $596 shipped. A little more than what I wanted to pay, but at least I'll have it by Friday.. I got it from japan star motors in LA. So now I'm thinking about changing the -throw out bearing
-pilot bearing
While it's out...
