Transmission Problem
If the torque went bad the trash may have been pumped through the auto tranny . Not good. If it is a cheap fix they would have had it done and gone for a ride . Buy it cheap and plan for the worst .
If the torque converter went bad it can be rebuilt. I had one rebuilt up here for $200. You can also get one from Level Ten which from what I here is bad ***. If you buy it PM me I can get the trans rebuilt for around $600. I have an auto it isn't that bad, just don't race out of the hole.
Lots of wisdom in dubosr's post. Yes, if it's just the torque converter you can pull the tranny and replace the converter. As pointed out the entire transmission could also be burnt up due to the faulty converter, which is not cheap. Definately not one to jump on without a dissection first.
level ten only modifies your existing working TC, they don't sell new ones (for Mazdas). As mentioned, when the TC goes the rest of the transmission is almost always toast. It would be cheaper to find a used tranny than to rebuild. The labor was $3K on mine to R/R/R. I used level 10 TC (back when you could still get one) and rebuild kit so parts were around $1500. NO WARRANTY from level 10 and no warranty on labor either since I brought my own parts. 5 speed switch is an option and would have been cheaper for me.
Thank you for you help. I am getting an automatic only because of the low miles and a good deal. It is a 1993 Silverstone Metallic touring model with RED leather interior. It has 55,000 miles. Here is a pic!
