My 4th-5th gear synchro is off! Help!
I have a base model VR FD and I know that gear synchros are a problem for some. Before I got my FD, the original owner said he had the dealer fix the 4th to 5th synchro so it didn't grind (this was about 25000 miles ago) and now it's grinding again.

My question-

How common are these problems?


How much does it cost? I can also have Ivan (sunnyvale) fix it but don't know if it's going to cost my arm off.

The labor is about the same for a clutch job, and any transmission shop can do it. 5th synchro alone, you're looking at $500 labor + $20 part. Most people add a new clutch and/or flywheel while the mechanic is in there.

Yea, may as well save it for when you're doing the clutch. Don't wait too long tho, you break a tooth and that sumbitch goes flying straight thru the tranny, god only knows what it'll get into.

To help prolong the life in the future, I've heard double clutching when going to 5th helps.

 

Mine grinded going into fifth and I missed 3rd gear one day and lost 5th and Reverse, I had to put a new 5th/Reverse clutch hub assembly, so I put all new syncronizers in while I was there, it was like $350 for all the parts. They say 5th grinds from missing 3rd gear to much, so I shift very slow now. lol. I would diffently put a new clutch in while it's out, cause mine started slipping 3,000 miles after I took it out to fix the trans.

 

Yeah my fifth gear synchro grinds, scars the hell out of me. What i noticed works is when u put in the clutch to go from 4th-5th, take it out of 4th wait like a second go all the way to ur right and then straight into 5th. Mine dont grind no more.
