When the car is in neutral, it seems that the transmission is making a loud rattling noise but when I clutch in the noise goes away. I've been told its my bearings but im not sure. WHat is the problem and can I drive the car without it causing anymore issues? Thanks

mine does that with the a/c on..put the clutch in it goes away..w/ the a/c however i dont hear it...i think its the exhaust shield under my car that rattles when the transmission is engaged

+1 for throw-out bearing. I'm not certain, but it could seize and screw up your input shaft if you let it go too long.

your bearing can freeze and mess up the diaphram spring or the bearing can fall apart and you wont be able to disengage the clutch.

It is NOT the throw out bearing. A throw out bearing will make noise when the clutch is in because that's when it's under load, you have the opposite problem.

Your rattle is most likely a bearing on the input shaft of the trannsmission. With the tranny in neutral and the clutch out the input shaft is spinning so you hear the bearing inside the transmission growling. When you push the clutch in the transmission is decoupled from the engine and the growling coasts to a stop. If you listen closely you'll most likely hear the growling at low speeds as well. At higher speeds it's drowned out by engine noise.

My transmission does the same. Some of them do this and still last forever; mine has been fine for over a couple years now. I have a spare tranny I plan to rebuild and swap into the car sometime in the future.

I still think its the throw-out bearing for the following reasons;

First off the point of the throw-out bearing is to disengage the clutch from the flywheel correct? So when when the clutch goes in the throwing bearing has pressure upon it to make it stop rattling. If the car is sitting in neutral what is the throw-out bearing doing? its stationary thus giving it free game to "rattle". That just how i see it but of course i could be wrong. There was a local guy around here with that problem and it DID end up being the throw out bearing

But now as i type this it could be a bearing in the trans...haha.

Ok since its back from the dead.....

If it is the TO bearing "rattling" from not being loaded it should stop as soon at the clutch pedal is preloaded at all...so if the noise goes away with light pressure on the pedal its probably the TO however if it only goes away once the clutch is actually disengaged then it is most likely either the input shaft bearing or the the bearing between the input shaft and the main/output shaft(most likely have many of these go bad). if it is determined to be one of the two in the gear box the next step is to take notice of any reduction in gearbox noise when in 4th gear vs all others....if it is noticibly quieter in 4th you can be pretty certain its the bearing inbetween the shafts.

How bad is this noise? I have the same symptoms (noise in neutral clutch out, no noise clutch in) but man, its a pretty bad "rattle". Sounds like someone swapped out my clutch for a rock tumbler. Is this the same problem?

Also, when i installed this clutch (not long ago) i felt a slight vibration in the peddle. Is this related?

post 19 doesnt tell me how bad the rattle is. It really sounds like rocks being tossed about in a tin can. People above said they drive around with this, but i just couldnt see them not being worried if its as loud as mine. It also makes my engine shake quite a bit at idle compared to when its revved up at all. That makes me worried that it might break other things.

well the root cause of the noise along with the method described on how to trouble shoot it has already been stated......however it sounds like your problem is closer to the end result of not fixing which ever bearing it was before it completley destroyed itself....if its as bad as your describing than its time to fix it. also do to it having an affect on engines load (causing rough idle) its pretty safe to rule out the T/O so this leaves you with either the input shaft bearing,I/O shaft bearing, counter shaft bearing.

Symptoms agree with the input shaft bearings. If it were the throw out bearing the problem would get worse when you push in the clutch not go away. I know this because mine is doing the exact same thing. I think you will also find it's worse in 1&2nd, get marginaly better in 3rd&4th, and be very slightly noisey in fifth.
