Ok but what if you want to sell it? I'm advertising this car as near mint condition. I guess I could try to pawn it off on some unsuspecting fool that probably wouldn't try shifting to 5th on a test drive, but that's not me. I hope that prospective buyers will read my posts and let it speak volumes on the standards I keep with this car. I don't let even a small electrical switch go out without getting it fixed immediately. I change the oil every 900 miles because that's all I put on it in one year. I use fuel stabilizer every time I fill the tank so nothing will gum up while it sits. I consider this car one of my children. Would you let your child go through life with a bad synchro? I don't think so Ok, maybe I am a little too obsessed with my 7. Do ya think?

You sound like the person I'd like to buy my next used car from. I think most of us on this forum are pretty dedicated to our cars, it is only a matter of degrees.

What you do to the tranny is entirely your call. You could tell the prospective buyer about this minor problem and let him decide if he wants to spend the money for it, or just live with it, like I do. I purchased this FD (my second one) with the syncro problem and was fully aware of what I was facing. Was not my concern, at the least, and I expect to drive this tranny for a very long time without taking it apart.

Good luck with your sale, sounds like you have a great car.

Regarding your question if I would let my child go through life with a bad synchro?

I think most children have some synchro problems and it seems that only age can fix it...

Well, the color is right up your alley.

Here is the ad link if you want to check it out:

I'm afraid to say I would like $18,500 for it or perhaps allowing for the "Club Discount" I'd take $18K even. I know, I know, that's probably one of the highest priced FDs in the forum unless you count the 400 hp highly modified ones. It's just that I've been treasuring this vehicle for the last 5 yrs I've had it and I just want top dollar or keep it. I've had several comments along the lines of, hey just keep it another 5 years babying it; let the supply of really nice ones dry up a bit and maybe it will sell for even more than 18K. Well that doesn't sound like a bad idea to me really.

My wife and I are buying one of the new high performance model Pontiac Solstice GXPs. I decided I shouldn't have all the fun so we are getting it with automatic trans (so it can be my wife's car also). Hey the auto trans doesn't sound half bad after the transmission/clutch bill I'm having to pay now

BTW, have you checked out those 2007 Solstice GXPs? Drop dead looks, 260 HP, 260 ft/lbs of torque, dual exhaust, turbo-charged, direct injection, oil injection similar to the 7 and made right here in the good ol' U S of A. 0 - 60 in under 5.5

4th?

Hi there,

I can relate to the discussion here, but mine happens when shifting into or out of 4th. It grinds at med-high RPM's and doesn't sound good at all. It didn't do this last season. The previous owner had the 5th gear synchro updated, but I haven't heard much about the 4th gear as a "known issue". Anyone have a similar issue or suggestions for a fix?

Thanks,

Erik

PS - If I have missed a previous forum about 4th gear synchros, please post a link and sorry for the repeat...I searched.

Erik, I had the same problem from when I initially purchased the car...only the 4th gear shift would grind, which sucked at the track, but I lived with it bc my mechanic was saying that a replacement of the 4th gear synchro would require a total teardown, which would've cost roughly $1500 bucks. Instead I purchased a used j-spec tranny from japan2la for $450...with shipping and install, the bill's about $700 bucks, which was reasonable for me.

Talking Update on my 5th gear synchro

I am sooooo stoked dudes!

Got my car back today for the synchro problem. Turns out things happen for a reason I guess. I was pretty low on my clutch, just shy of the rivets in some areas so it was a good time to just go through the whole thing. I ended up with all new synchros, new bearings, seals, spindle, and also a brand new clutch. Refilled with Royal Purple tranny oil. Whole bill was $1969.00

Shifts beautiful now like new. I don't think I'm going to be able to sell this thing now. Bummer

Feel for ya. The 2 sec thing did work for mine. It depends on how bad the break is. I've seen pics where the synchro ring was broken clean thru in 2 places making 2 complete pcs. I have mine and it had a break in one place but was basically intact. Problem is under load the thing would have expanded causing the grinding sound. I could have let it go awhile but as it turns out, I'm glad I had my mechanic look into it otherwise wouldn't have found that my clutch was low. May have done damage to my flywheel or something and would have been more expensive. When these cars break they generally are expensive to fix unless you're a rotor-head. I wish I was one. Problem is, the only way to learn is to experiment on your own car which I'm not really willing to do. So I only do the basic stuff like change my oil, coolant and the like.

To fix the synchro problem, technically only the synchro and a new locknut is needed. But it's also a good idea IMO to have a new 5/R clutch sleeve ready too, esp since it appears you have a long wait for parts.

The wedge collar, wire ring, throwout bearing, clutch release fork, pilot bearing and seal are also a good idea if you are changing the clutch.

Jaape, not an expert here, I've only done it once. But since no one else chimed in this is what I recall changing out when I fixed my 5th gear synchro. Sorry, I don't have the part numbers available. In addition to the 5th gear synchro, I also replaced the following:
1. Clutch fork: IIRC about $45 U.S. I read that they tend to fatique and break with age, especially with upgraded pressure plates.
2. Rear seal of the transmission: (only about $5 U.S.) Cheap. Why not.
3. Clutch and Pressure plate: (these are all relatively expensive, and replacing it really depends on the condition/mileage of the clutch and PP that's in there now. Mine had about 60k miles on it and I just chose to upgrade while I had the transmission out. Your decision.
4. Shift select Spindle: Supposedly it was upgraded with a stiffer spring to help avoid missed shifts. I can't recall for sure, but IIRC about another $40 U.S.
5. Good quality synthetic gear oil, I used Redline. NEO and ROYAL PURPLE are other popular brands. $30.
Depending on your budget, other things you might consider are resurfacing your flywheel or replacing it with an aftermarket lightweight flywheel. Also new pilot bearing, which can be difficult to get out without the proper tools. Again, depending on mileage, you could just re-pack it with grease .Search for options and other info on those.
