So I kind of did a quick change and it seems there are two drain plugs and only one fill plug. What does the torx bit plug go to and is it bad to fill with fluid? I had though that it was the fill for the front part of the tranny but see most procedures say leave that plug alone.

Can't recall what that torx socket-head is for anymore and too lazy to look it up. If you've turned it, I'd try to put it back as close to where it was.

Well I am saying that I used it as a fill along with the standard fill. Should it be alright or do I need to empty the fluid I put in that torx bit hole? Basically I found that there was maybe half a quart of oil in the trans and now it's filled with the right amount but second gear is a bit hard to get into when downshifting then it used to be.

 

You should only use that "A" fill hole to fill the trans. Once fluid starts coming out of that hole, re-insert the plug, tighten, and you are good to go. You do not want to over/under fill it.

A little Teflon tape is appropriate but don't over-tighten the fill plug. It's pipe thread. I've seen them practically drilled through the transmission case. Not necessary.

I also agree with the teflon recommendation. Also torque spec for filler plug is 19-28ft-lbs.

I think you are ok. It's been awhile since I've had my transmission apart, but believe there are holes to allow the fluid to move between the center housing (where the fill plug is) and the transmission case (where the hex nut is), otherwise fluid wouldn't get to the transmission case. And they are close to the same level so you wouldn't be over- or under-filling. If you are concerned, you can pull the fill plug and let out any extra fluid (if there is any) or fill (if none seeps out).

I believe the FSM says to install new when you change your fluid, but i don't think anyone ever does

 

I think the FSM says the drain plug washer should be changed. But Tom's right, they can usually be reused without problems.

If you have problems finding new, I bet both the fill and drain plugs are the same on other MAZDA cars of the 90's and available as close as the local U-PULL-IT lot.
