transmision: collar, ring and throwout bearing problems
Look in the FAQ (and other useful links) sticky at the top of this section. Scroll down to ‘C’ for clutch. There’s a video demonstrating how to release the clutch and good shots of the retaining ring and collar in the pressure plate.
your car uses a different clutch setup. you shouldn't be buying a Gen 3 clutch from Atkins (or anywhere else) for it. it's not going to work. first, there's the pull vs. push issue. second, they use different clutches (the spline-counts are different). third, the pressure plates are different as well due to different flywheel - it's 240 mm vs. 225 mm (maybe even 215, depending on what year your car is).

if you bought a Gen 3 clutch for your car, return it and get the right one.

I have not bought the clutch yet and I woukd get one for my year, the previous owner took out the motor, tore it down and also removed the tranny. Just trying to decide if the clutch is reusable. Just to be clear, my car is 85 gs so it has a push pressure plate? Right? The plate does not lock onto the throwout bearing it just pushes against it?
yes.
1985 = push-type with a 225 flywheel
if you look at your tranny, right about where the slave bolts to it, there should be square hole. the fork fits there for the slave to move it. your throwout bearing will fit on the input shaft and the fork then holds it in place to move it back and forth. nothing more to do, but mate the tranny and engine.
do you have a copy of the FSM? it should probably have a decent illustration of how everything fits together.

here's a link simply because it's the first relevant photo (look at the "additional photo") i found that shows what i'm saying : https://www.racingbeat.com/RX7-1986-...ate/12613.html
