Trans noise and sound damping

Searching turned up a ton of "my door sounds hollow/tinny" threads but no help.

Has anyone put any sound damping material around the shifter? And how much trans noise is normal? I've got a B&M shifter, ACT clutch/9.5lb flywheel and a recently rebuilt trans and there's a ton or whirring and stuff coming from the shifter area at idle. Just curious if there's an easy/cheap fix thats been done.

i did. on my last fd, i dynamatted that area from the inside then placed some DEI heat shielding stuff around the tranny/shifter area to keep the heat from coming in. it definitely helped.

starting with the basics - do you have the factory rubber part and sound deadener in place? that helps alot as well.

That amount of whirring doesn't sound normal. Unless you have something solid bolting the tranny to the frame of the car (like a tranny brace) it should be no louder than any other FD with a good tranny.

Here's the link for the hollow/tin door fix. It's on my to-do list. Problem: the crash bar is loose/separated from the door skin.

Yeah theres actually a noticable difference with and without the stock sound deadener, so make sure you reinstall that if you didnt

inside the car...I left one nut off of it once, and I could hear lots of noise...sounds like you got it.

royal purple helped with some of my tranny gear whirling noises...light weight MOMO shifter. I wish I had a nice unworn stocker, since they are weighted, that deadens a lot of noise too.

how does your clutch sound when depressed?

coming from the clutch or shifter area??

common problem with that I believe is failing pilot bearing. Did you replace that bearing and seal before re-installing the tranny?

maybe some misalignment there is causing some noises inside the gear box?

I hope dgeesaman chimes back in...

**edit...misread your last post.

LESS noise is strange???

Yes. Less noise coming from the shifter area with clutch depressed. Thats been going on since I got the car. Since then I replaced the clutch and the transmission was rebuilt.

It sounds like the noise is a bearing issue - probably louder when the car is cold, right?

Anyway, I'd expect it's either the pilot bearing or one of the other bearings on the input shaft. More likely the pilot bearing since it's easy to damage when removing/installing the tranny, and since you had the tranny itself rebuilt the other input shaft bearings should be new.
