tranny wont go back on (like an inch shy)
I keep getting like an inch shy.....
I used the alignment tool (same one I used the last time I did this) and the f*cker wont go on..I spent 3 hours trying everything...no luck....
Anyone got any tricks or hints...
The car is on jack stands.....

Two things you could try:
1. Turn the shaft a bit in the tranny.
2. More likely, the shaft tip is not getting through the outer rubber/metal o-ring that seals the pilot bearing. If you're that close then its lined up right or very close. The thing that may not be exact is that the tranny may not be exactly horizontal to the engine, or your engine tilted a bit.
If you think it's lined up correctly, then it should take a bit of push to get it through the o-ring.
Do you have an engine brace? Are you using a tranny jack?

yeah i got it right there..the spindle is into the clutch plate..but isnt going any further..I already removed the pp and clutch and reinstalled them with the alignment tool in place..
i tried pushing with the clutch in while moving the tail of the tranny up and down..no luck
so frustrating......

the last three times i had my tranny out, i ran into the same problem. all i did was find one of the longer bolts and start threading it in. sounds crude, but it worked for me. my tranny is coming back out tomorrow for another clutch and i'm sure i'll have to do it again. sometimes the splines just have too much friction to get it on there. good luck

Great tip for you.. that last inch can be a bitch.. get some nice long bolts... maybe 3-4 inches long.. and tighten them to pull motor and tranny together.. then put in your normal bolts..
Sometimes the engine drop to the front, that cause what ever you do the tail will always hit the top of tranny tunnel.
Engine and tranny balanced on the engine mount, when tranny taken off, engine will tilt forward. Need to jack the front of engine to make it align with the tranny.....
Try that...hope it helps...

Godzilla and reza..thats 2 great posts....
I wasnt sure about the bolt method but will try that now as it seems its a proven method
and reza...that makes complete sense as the shift housing keeps trying to jump in the car when things start to look good..
ok i feel better about this...
I got a little worried cause im getting it tuned on friday..and i havent got the tranny in and havent test out my new 850ccs

Well, I did not jack mine, I put a piece of wood, had a third person in front with pry bar, pushing the oil pan up....
then have someone push the tranny from tail.
And I in the middle guiding the tranny in.....
F@#k around with it for at least 2 hours starting with just me, then adding a brother...then in the final 15 minutes, a friend....

Use the long starter bolt w/a 3/4 in spacer in the top rt bolt hole this will draw it in enough to get the other bolts threaded and suck it right in. To help that process you can attatch the ppf to the tranny loosely, but only the bottom 2 on the ppf not the top 2.

I just had that problem with my FC, Needed to pull the pilot bearing, but couldn't due to lack of correct tools and time. I ended up putting it back together without changing it, was a bitch to get together. I got it far enough to put one of the long bolts in (by the starter), then the top bolt (a longer than regular one), then I had to force it into alignment from the side (leg pressing it to the passenger side). I got it together but haqve to take it apart again after the weekend.
Figured that jacking the moyor would help. I had the same problem. I think the FSM says to support the motor before removing the transmission. That would prevent it from shifting and make the re-installation easier.
