Tranny rebuild tools? 41mm socket

Trying to get my tranny apart. Need the 41mm nut to come off the output shaft. Was thinking of buying a 41mm socket (deep) and have it machined in half and weld a steel pipe between or get a wrench and make a locking tab to bolt on hold the tranny for turning. Before I go thru the trouble thought I would ask if anyone had a better easier anwser.

Just looked through Dave Geesaman's notes on his tranny rebuild, and he did just that - take a socket, cut it in half, and weld a pipe in the middle. That's really the only way that nut is coming off.

You don't need to undo that nut if you're just doing a 5th gear synchro. If' you're going deeper than the 5th gear synchro, you may just want to get a JDM tranny - they pop up for around $400 and you have a nice, low-mileage transmission. I've installed quite a few (one is in my car in fact) and they're a great option.

Hell, just making that special tool will probably run $100.

This is on my Liberty built tranny. I stripped 3rd gear at the track a couple weeks back.
