Tranny question (yes, I searched, not sure I found...)

Hi everyone.
I have a question about the transmission (manual in my car).
It doesn't grind, but it feels a bit notchy upshifting.
This depends on how quickly I shift, but sometimes it depends on tranny temp and... the day...
Downshifting in every gear is perfectly fine, no problems, grinding, nothing like that.
If you have any suggestions, I would really appreciate them.
I found some situations that I had something in common with, but nothing close enough.

Mine is not quite like that though.
It's no problem to put them in, just feel notchy, almost clunky or something...
If I shift really fast, I almost feel them grind, however they are not grinding, as I don't hear any noise... I think I made my explanation even worse...

Synco... just notchy due to changing gears fast... mine does the same... usually changing very smooth when changing fast, but sometimes crunches... try changing the oil... it should make it easier to change...

Replace your gear oil with a quality synthetic oil. Make sure to drain and refill the small reservoir at the gear selector.

Notchiness is caused by a couple of things:
1) rounded shifter teeth
2) worn synchro
3) insufficient synchronization caused by a gear oil of too low friction.

The job of a synchro is to stop the rotating gear. If it's not grinding, the gear is not rotating, and the synchro has done it's job.

If it's simply notchy sometimes, I'd say the problem is less of the synchro and more likely shifter teeth. They usually get rounded off from grinding shifts and unnecessarily zesty shifts. The shifter teeth are on the gear and shift slider and each of those parts cost $200. So adding that to the cost of a rebuild is one expensive bill. You might consider going to another tranny with lower miles and less worn components.

Thank You

Thank you all guys, I appreciate it.
I will obviously try the oil change, seems to make for a good last attempt.
My tranny only has 60K miles, but I don't know anybody who shifted it before me, so...
Judging from the conditions of the car I wouldn't see somebody doing any rough business with it, but, who the heck knows?
I am planning for some mechanical big time work over the winter, I guess I'll have to consider the tranny as well...
Thanks again.
Giovanni

When you change the oil, remove the big lower pan with oil out. Yes, it will be messy, but you can see the shifter teeth of the gears quite clearly. If the 2nd gear teeth are worn then you've found the source.

mine is a bit notchy too, with 6500 miles on the 5th gear synchro fix/rebuild, going NEO synthetic for my trans and Diff.

Always great advice from you... almost a trade mark....
Thanks, I'll try that as well.
Funny enough, I drove this morning and it felt a lot better than usual...
I forgot to ask a question that might be important generally speaking:
How far down do you push the clutch when you shift?
I do have a bit of a bad habit (quick shifting) to not depress the clutch all the way down...
I do make a point with this car, but I was just wondering...

Oh you definitely want to touch the floor with the pedal. Not so much because it's necessary, but because lazy shifting almost always comes with imperfect timing and the bad timing puts extra wear on things.
