Are you able to shift into 2nd or 1st with the car parked and off? Or is it just a problem with the engine running?
I'll assume you're saying you can't shift with the car parked and engine off. Something is blocking the 1-2 shift rod from moving. It could be jammed because a clip came loose, or maybe something with the fork.
If you're going to change the tranny oil, just loosen the fill plug, drain the oil, and remove the lower cover. If you have a chance of fixing this shift issue with the tranny in the car, the lower cover is how you'll access it. Get someone to jiggle the shifter between 1 and 2 and have a look to see what's stopping it. (watch the shifts between 3rd and 4th in case you're not familiar with the internals)
There are also check ***** and sliders that prevent shifting into two gears at once. Have a look at the outside of the tranny on the drivers side. On that side of the housing there are two golf-ball sized metal covers, two tall bolts and a smaller bolt nearby. Make sure these bolts are present and snug tight.
