tran noise 1-3

Transmission makes a nocking noise when clutch is out. If sitting idle in neutral it is present but goes away as soon as clutch is pressed in. It also is present when driving in 1-3 gears (up to about 40mph noise stopped in 3rd gear) unless clutch is pressed in to shift gears. Have not heard it present or as loud maybe in 4th and 5th gear. Any opinions I'm thinking maybe the throwout bearing but wouldn't mind some opinions to take to the shop with me. Give them something to check first before they decide to rip apart the whole tranny and charge me out the **** for the labor to find out its something simple that could have saved all that. Thanks for any replies.

wow let me try that again.

ITs your berring in the rear of the tranny, the only way to fix it is to replace the needle berring, replacing the TO berring might help.

mkay so believe you said only way to fix that problem would be a rebuild. Now would I actually be better off in the long run and money wise to just have a new tranny installed (believe dealer quote was about 2300 labor not included for new non rebuilt transmission) vs the labor and parts of fixing the current tran? One now seems fine other than the noise which can get annoying seems to shift just fine am starting to get slight grinding with shifting into 5th gear but I understand that is pretty common.

2300$ just in labor?!

Just do it yourself, it's not that hard. Find a used transmission and swap it in unless you feel like spending a lot of money.

no that would be ~2300 for new tranny NOT counting labor didn't ask for what labor would run at the time was just checking on transmission prices.

Well if the noise stops when the clutch is disengaged (pushed to the floor), then the problem is not likely to be the transmission. Everything in the transmission keeps turning unless you are at a dead stop. So if you are driving along and push the clutch pedal down and the noise stops, it is most likely clutch related. And under the scenario that you are describing, the most likely culprit is the pilot bearing because that is the part that is stressed most when the clutch is engaged.

It is possible (though I doubt it), however, that a bearing in the transmission is starting to act up and is only evident when the transmission is under load.
