besides a fire extinguisher, i guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to also have a good set of fire resistant gloves to open the hood.

But in the end, some of us have easily over $10k in our engine bay. And that small investment would be woth it.
I wish you the best of luck OP.

I think what worries me the most is the amount of "been there, done that" replies in this thread. I didn't realize that this was a somewhat common problem. It could happen to any of us I suppose. When I finally get mine going in a few weeks, I think I will invest in a small extinguisher to keep in the rear bin.
Sorry to see that

i havent had it happen to me but ive seen it. does anyone have an idea of what a common cause of this could be? cuz obviously its becoming a common occurrence but what can we do to stop it? cuz we all put alot of money into our cars, an thats not something that we want to go to waste. though rebuilding these cars is so much fun, just not for the wallet

1. Heat
2. Age
3. Modification
In relative stock form, we are all prone to 1 & 2. The heat factory that is the OEM FD brakes down parts very fast. Age plays a huge role and is only compounded by number 1. Hoses, pulsation dampener, lines and leaks all begin to show age. An exhaust leak at the turbo can cause an engine fire. I've seen it happen. Now if owners have pulled in the reigns and restored the fuel system, there is always a possibility of error. New lines, fittings, aftermarket rails, and injectors can all be tricky to work with if you have never done it before. All in all it comes down to limiting the possibility with thorough restoration and maintenance. Even then, backups such as an extinguisher or suppressant system is always a good idea.
Theft is still my biggest fear. In a theft, every single trace of my car would be gone. There would be murders.

My condolences, unfortunately I know this pain myself
To those that were saying how slow the firemen were moving: What's the point? The car is done for, there are no structures or other cars near by, no one's life is in danger. So yeah there is no hurry as they just need to put it out.

I have American Collectors Insurance, been awesome to deal with (had a significant claim through them last year). Very easy process and they virtually didn't even raise my premium (something like $380 annual).
