Towing a Fd ? What kind of truck ?

Alright before I venture into FD's I want to buy a dd but not just any dd a nice truck so that just incase the FD ever blew a seal or decided to leak oil, coolant, etc. I have a way to get it home. Does anyone have a particular truck they use to tow there FD ? And if not what yall would recommend ? IE.. Chevy 2500 , Dodge Ram 2500, Chevy Silverado, etc. . I heard terrible things about Ford so I will not list it . Thanks in advance for any help. Also I am not big on trucks so whats the whole thing with the "tow package" do I have to have this to tow ?Also mods if this is in the wrong forum please feel free to move it I just put it in here cause I wanted to tow a FD mainly. Thanks. <Flame Suit On>

Any 1/2 Ton full size truck is plenty enough to tow an FD. I have an 1992 F-150 4x4 w/351. Has enough power to tow over the hills. I towed a 6500lb enclosed trailer about 7500 miles (OR to FL and back), should have had a 3/4 ton truck for that job.

You'll hear bad things about every type of truck, you should go to the forums for all the types of trucks and do your own investigation. The Chevy is an old design and typically places near the bottom on any comparision test. Right now Chevy is practically giving them away so they are a lot cheaper than the new Ford or Dodge.

just what ever it is make sure it can tow a 2800lb car and how ever much the trailer wieghts.....

Most trucks with v6s will be fine
my 95 4 runner 220 HP can tow an fd with a trailer.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just get it towed if the car ever broke down instead of buying a truck?

Personally I have a 1977 F-250 with a 16ft trailer but I didn't get it just to tow my car. Mainly for my ski-doo and jet ski's.

The FD can be expensive enough, I would not go buy a new truck right away if your getting an FD. The money would be better spent doing reliability mods or a new motor and a single turbo.

Just my 2 cents

Any on the above mentioned trucks should be able to tow an FD. Hell, I have a 98 POS Toyota Tacoma 4 banger and it hauls my car without a problem. Even with my > 300 pound dirtbike in the bed.

Hey how about stopping that trailer? I know pulling is good but make sure you can stop as well. From experience its no fun when some punk kids decides to jump in front of you then stop while your towing a 30ft boat. LoL no fun what so ever. (By the way we had an F-350 Turbo Diesel that thing did stop)

Hey - what is this, the F150 Forum?? Based on towing my race car around - if you tow an open flat trailer - a 1/2 ton is fine, if you go with a 20ft -24ft enclosed (3000lbs unloaded) then you'll probably want a 3/4 ton. Are you talking a new pickup here? Can I make you a deal on new Chevy/GMC....???

Where I goto school people are haters and if they saw the FD it would be over the border in the same day. Also because people down here dont usually have insurance least this way I will mess them up instead of vice versa. So I thought it will be wise investment. Also I could tow the 7 myself instead of paying people. And I could help my buddys who have 7's as DD's.

Ford? I mean really. Who buys off brand. Joking. Ford is kinda respectable.....well, maybe. They own a lot of things, including Mazda.

I will sell you my REPU for $5k, you can put $10k into it to fix it up and have one hell of a tow vehicle for way less than the price of a new truck

Glad to hear that, I plan on using my V6 Tacoma as a tow vehicle, although in the future I'm thinking of springing for the TRD supercharger, headers and exhaust to give it a little more grunt. I figure that'll be cheaper than buying a new full sized truck.

Ok,

Is it just me or does this sound completely ridiculous? If your car breaks down call a roll-back...pay $50 to get it towed to your mechanic.

Even if you had to tow the car once a month you would never pay the tow service enough to pay for even a cheap truck and trailer to tow the car...right? Also, how can you be worried about what will happen to the car if you're in the cab with the driver?

I just had my car towed two days ago, clutch went out with no warning. First time it has been transported since it was moved down here from Maryland in '99.

Also, if people do not have insurance...how is you having a truck going to help anything?

Unless you plan on throwing together cheap mods and rebuilding engines frequently...then you do not need a truck.

-C

If I am not getting something...someone please explain; I really want to understand the logic behind this.

If you track your FD, towing it to the track is not a bad idea.
Anyway....FWIW Mazda shows a Mazda V-6 truck pulling a Spec Miata in its promotional matierial. If your buying a vehicle for this specific task I would purchase a truck with a V-8. A small V-8 will pull the FD just fine. In Colorado I would want a 350ci V-8 at the least. I had a V-8 Ford Exploder that pulled the **** out of my 3500# boat. I just got a Dodge Durango 4.7L V-8 (w/ tt package) to pull my boat and/or car trailer.

Ok I really dont think you understand how bad it is in Texas. My friends supra was stolen and was found across the border 3 months after the incident. As far as people not having insurance I have been hit and run 2 times and having a cattle guard might actually provide me some protection as I park backwards and people have hit me both from the front. I would like to also point out the Rx-7 gets like 17 mpg. Compared to the v6 which I have seen do 30mpg. Also I could use the truck to also transport trannys , motors, in the back of the bed and not in the back of my 7. I mean there is alot of threads why not to make your 7 a daily driver. I think this is the next best thing if I can't daily drive my 7. Like I said its not that I dont want to daily drive the 7 it just becomes expensive, car will get keyed , stolen , broken into, etc etc. Remember how close I am to the border.

I'm in the same boat right now, trying to find a truck to tow my FD around. Main reason for me is that I live way out in the boonies here and if I wanna go to a big city it's about a 3hr drive to either Dallas or Oklahoma City. Plus I drive to San Antonio a lot. I'm just trying to keep the miles on the car down. Also if my var ever did break(knock on wood) I'd have to get to to Dallas atleast. I don't think AAA will help me out on that one.

So far a late model F-150(V8) is at the top of my list too. Sure it's a Ford, but they're damn cheap. As for the trailer, they are kinda expensive, so I think I will just rent a U-haul flat bed trailer for my long trips, unless I find a cheap used one somewhere. An interesting note though, U-haul will NOT rent trailers to anyone with a Ford Explorer. Apparently they tend to roll over quite easily. lol

I've got a S-10 ZR2 4x4 (V6) and I've been wondering how it would tow my car. I'm wanting to get a F-250 4 door 4x4 with the turbo d but it's hard to justify the cost...
