torque converter or tranny? HELP!!!!!
My buddy's 93 automatic goes into gear but only moves forward or reverse very slowly while the rpm's just soar. Weird that the lower the rpm's the more the car moves. just wondering, is it the torque converter or perhaps the tranny?
thanks,
Glean

First thing..check the tranny fluid level. If thats ok then the TC is probably shot.
The field service guide has tests for the tranny/tc to determine if its operating within specs.
Great time to do a 5spd swap

fluid is good and clean. the car has 43k miles. I drained 14 oz. of fluid and added greased lightning additive and the car moves more but still same problem.

he should limit his driving of the vehicle and take it to a transmission specialist like Aamco. there are alot of things that could be causing the problem and need to be diagnosed by actually feeling it. To me it sounds like the transmission is slipping. I dont know about maryland but here (bay area, CA.) aamco checks them out for free.
