a ton of white smoke

Ok I just installed a nippondenso 255lph fuel pump and a midpipe yesterday. Since then I get huge amounts of whiite smoke at idle. Smells like oil and I know its not running rich cause ithe Air/Fuel guage actually sais its running leaner now. It didn't say that after I installed the fuel pump but it does now that I have the downpipe and now that its smoking. At first I thought it was just my new exhaust gaskets but theres no way they could smoke that much or that long. Not just at idle either. It smokes anytime but thats when it seems to be the worst. I've read it could be my oil control rings, oil metering pump stuck open, the turbos are burnt up, or the turbo oil return line is clogged. The thing is I doubt its my oil control rings or the turbos cause my clutch master cylinder is out so I haven't even driven it since I installed the new parts, and I don't think I've put the engine under enough stress just revving it up a little in my driveway to blow a ring or destroy my turbos and how would my oil return line just suddenly clog. I didn't notice the smoke last night after I installed the midpipe and ran the engine but I can't say it didn't smoke. Maybe one of you has an idea. Where is the oil metering pump anyway? How would a downpipe make that big of a difference?

I'm thinking/hoping its the oil metering pump cause when i rev it up the amount of smoke stays the same but it seems thinner because of the speed which it comes out. I would think if it were a oil ring problem when you rev it up the increased pressure would spew out more oil. Just speculation. Any advice on where it is or how to test/fix/replace it. Oh and if I turn on the air conditioner the smoke thins out a bit. I also disconnected the ic pipe from the turbo to the intercooler and stuck a rag in between the pipes and ran the engine to look for oil deposits. Again it thinned out a bit but didn't fix it and I only got a ring shaped oil mark not a full circle which may just be the normal amount of oil in the intake piping rubbing on the rag. Not real conclusive. Anyway if anyone has any info on the oil metering pump they would like to share I would appreciate it.

my guess would be your water seals but why would it happen when you install a few mods?

My understanding is that if its your water seals then the "white smoke" is actually steam and dissapates quickly in air. This definately lingers it filled my entire garage with 2 garage doors open and a fan blowing it out side. I've been lucky in that my neighbors haven't complained yet about me filling there houses with smoke. Its that bad. I'm pretty sure its oil.

Can't smell aything i smoke to much. Everyone I ask (doesn't know cars) sais they can't quite place it. Its not fuel, the the smoke is white or grey not black, and my car doesn't sputter. Also I cleaned a part of the inside of my exhaust tip and ran the egine and it didn't soot up. In fact it stayed very clean but felt slick like it was oiled. Like I said I'm pretty sure its oil.

Few tips:

Ditch the air fuel gauge. It's worthless.

Put the cat BACK ON the car unless you have a good way of controlling boost. IE: ported wastegate..

It's not the metering oil pump.

The smoke from water seal failure isn't steam. Some is, but the coolant actually "burns" like oil.

Just because you don't actually "drive the car"; doesn't mean you can't break it..

Ok, now I have a few questions..

How many miles are on the car?

Does the "smoke" go away after the car warms up to operating temperature?

I've seen several motors with bad oil seals.. and the symptoms are different. Sometimes it'll smoke in high RPM shifts, and sometimes will smoke constantly (my car)..

My advice to you is stop messing with the car until you can get someone to help you properly diagnose the problem. Ignorance is a big factor in the life of these things.. No offence to you, but you should continue reading before trying to tackle this car.

ok it has 100,000 miles. And I don't think theres any steam. When its steam theres usually a bit of water dripping out of the tailpipe. AlsoI did a pretty common test of putting a piece of paper in front of the exhaust tip. It never got moist or wet. I'm almost certain its not water. Oh my car does not smoke when cold. As it warms up it starts to smoke though.

Try this..

Make sure your car is cold, open your filler cap and ask someone to start the car as you watch the water level... If it starts to over flow, soon after your car cranks, you most likely have some sort of water seal issue..

Does your car over heat as it warms up??

Question

Anyone, i have tried that test and it does start to overflow before it warms up,but i thougt that was normal.. did you have a blown water seal.. thanks. ps, gets a tiny puff of smoke on start up but never any other time, it has never overheated as far as i can tell with aftermarket water temp gauge. 50k, stock 93.

Is the 100K miles on the stock motor? Or has it been rebuilt?

Ill bet a o-ring. Water evaporates in the chamber from the ignition of the fuel and the coolent will turn to white smoke. I had a o-ring do out and it blew white smoke very little at first and then for about three days it kicked out a whole lot of white smoke, then when I was driving it my coolent level light came on and she had a hard time holding collent after that. My coolent level stayed full or real close to full untill she finaly went.

Good luck. It sounds like you have a rebuild coming up in the near future.

If the builder didn't replace the oil rings, that could very well be the problem. My engine was assembled with the old oil rings and smoked terrible..

I'm pretty confident that what you describe isn't coolant.

I just had an oil change recently could it just be burning off any excess oil?

its probably just your midpipe being worn in. THis happened when i installed my downpipe. Run your car for an hour and drive it. If it still smokes the next time you start it......u have other issues

This is also almost definately the phenomenon you are seeing if you used PB blaster or something like it to soak the cat bolts in before you loosened and removed them to take off your cat or other midpipe.
