Thumbs up Tokico Illuminas + Eibach Pro + AVS Intermetiate = WEEEEEEEEEEE

Okay, I just got my car back today from getting my suspension upgraded.

Here is the deal.

My bump stops were GONE, totally, like, not present at all. This was causing my wheels to rub on the fenders. I figured that when I had them replaced I might as well go ahead and do my shocks too, and springs all at the same time. I also needed new tires.

So, I had the Tokico Illuminas put in, along with the Eibach Pro Kit springs, and I had Yokohama AVS Intermediates put on. Now I know that the new tires have a lot to do with this, but I can safely say that my car handles like a shifter cart now.

HOOOOOLY SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEITE!

This is amazing; it’s like a whole new car. I have an R1 so I'm going from the R1 suspension to this. To me it does not seem much stiffer, or rougher at all when going over bumps. To me it feels about the same as it did before. I do have to be a little more careful when turning into driveways and such though, and some really bad dips I have to take slow(I mean at normal speed, not 60 MPH like *I* usually do) so not to bottom out.

This is totally amazing, I have not gotten the car to lose traction once yet. I've only had it for a day though, and i haven't autocrossed it yet, but we have a meet at the end of the month.

I've tried to get the rear end to come out, but so far I have not used enough speed to do so. I took a nice S curve at normal people take at 15 to 20 MPH, and that I previously could take at about 40 MPH before I started to lose traction, at 64 MPH and it was holding solid as a rock. I've taken some 90 intersections at what seems like speeds that would cause a wreck, and I get nothing, it just turns and goes. I took a nice off ramp turn from a small road that is rated at 15 MPH, at about 30 MPH, and then floored it in the turn. It was amazing, when I floored it the car straightened out and shot like a rocket, it just pulled itself out of the turn because I was not expecting it.

Also, I am not using my power steering, so I have an even better feel for what is happening. Its amazing, it really is like it turned my car into a go-cart!

BTW I got those tires from Tirerack.com for $75 each, so kind of special they had going I think.

The shocks were $103 each from Mazda Comp, and the Springs were $245 for the set from Mazda Comp.

The labor was $350 to replace the bump stops, install the shocks and springs, and mount and balance the tires.

All in all I think it was money WELL spent, plus the car looks better too

Well, I was kinda stupid about the bump stops. I should have ordered them from Mazda Competition, but instead I let my mechanic order them. They were $55 each. I thought they would be cheaper then that is why I didn't worry about it.

You can order them from Mazda Competition though for less.

Yes, you need spring compressors, which is why I didnt do it myself.

To order from Mazda Comp you need 2 race timeslips. Its well worth it to do this. Just go to 2 autocross events and run your Mazda Car and take a picture of it with the numbers on it, and then fill out thier form and send it in. Its an easy process, and autocrosses usually cost etween $15 and $25 to run in, plus they are fun, and you can sav emuch more then that on one order from Mazda Competition. Not only that but the guys that work their know thier stuff, and can help you out. Mazda Competition is held in very high regard by the entire auto industry, its a great sourse of pride for Mazda, and something that everyone with an FD should be involved in IMO. You can order ANY OEM part from them. I have orders even simple coolent hoses and and even bolts from them, and they don't charge shipping.

One last note about the shocks. The dials on the top where you adjust the settings are plastic and can break easily, which I don't like. The mechanic actually messed one of mine up during the install, it still works for now, but I dunno if it will last. The thing is though, I have mine set to 5 (stiffest) all the way around, and I dont' see myself changing that, so I'm not too worried about it. This is the only bad thing I hae seen about the shocks.

Oh, and no, I don't know that guy. Is he in Little Rock? I know (or know of) most of the people in Little Rock with FDs, there are about 6 that I know of.

Heh - the little POS plastic shock adjusters on my Koni's did the same thing - I was adjusting everything before an auto-x and it cracked in half. I just keep a needle-nose pliers in the car in case I need to fiddle with it.

Something else interesting to note - on my Koni's (granted, this was on an AWD Talon), the best all around didn't come from full hard - I had the best luck with it set at about 2/3, maybe a little less....

Sounds like a nice setup.........I was thinking of replacing my shocks with the tokico illuminas as well.....seems like everybody recommends them.............If your working with stock springs is there any problem replacing the shocks yourself??? Big job or no bid deal??? Thanks for your comments............enjoy the new ride!!!
