tire wear at track days

Im preparing to go to my first driving school at VIR mads!
I have new gforce tires on the rear. the front however is rolling on nitto nt555. I have been trying to use up teh nitto's and get new g force's for teh front also.
it looks like my tires (which are wearing unevenly) are not going to pass tech for teh driving school (low tread on the inside).
Im concerned if I buy new tires for teh front that ill then take the car to the track and beat teh crap out of them.
My question is; while competing in a track day with your FD do your tires take lots of abuse?

would you run 2 week old street tires at a track?

should I just buy a cheeper tire for the track?

Hey there man,

For track days, i would always put on the best tires i can. You do wear out tires considerably at a track day. But in the end it depends on the combo etc and how they take heat. R_compound tires you can expect maybe to last 3-8 track days or so. Street tires are more unpredictable.

SO in answer to your question. yes, my tires take a lot of abuse on the track.

I wouldn't suggest mix/matching. The g-force probally take heat much better tahn the nitto. Thus you'll find yourself understeering like a pig!

Good luck to you.

don't skimp on tires if you're serious about getting good results(lap times). i'm not sure how much you would be able to push your vehicle in driving school, but at any track event, suspension and tires are the most important pieces of equipment you should have other than safety equipment of course. i've been running at circuit events here in japan and i can personally tell you how important a good suspension set up is. you WILL go through tires like crazy if you push the car hard. racing is not cheap in any way, but if you're serious about it, spend the money on good or very good tires. it DOES make a difference. horsepower alone does NOT get you around the track faster. the right balance of performance mods along with driving skills do. hope that helps.

and to add to that..BRAKES!!! Tires/brakes to me are the most important. Because stock pads fade and wont' last you too long. Oh yeah, fluid too.

Definately get a set of upgraded brake pads.

Since this is your first time on the track, you shouldn't have to worry too much about excessive wear on a new set of tires. You will be spending most of your time getting familiar with what your car can do and what lines to take around the track.

Speed in the turns will come later.

Have fun! I did my first event a year and a half ago. Will hit number 10, 11 and 12 still this year.
