time to rebuild my motor?

hey professionals
what kind of detail symptoms are there on the fds by the time you need engine rebuild.?
the car's driven quite hard lately, and the motor has about 85k km on it.
I know that I need to get engine compression checked..
but are there any kinds of major problems/noise that I should be able to recognize easily on the motor by the time engine needs its rebuild?

Rough idle, hard to start, runs poorly etc... how hard has the car been driven? Get a compression test. There was a recent thread about this... can't seem to find it though...

well i bought the car at about 79k km
so i've been driven the car hard (high rpm drops at the dead start, racing, top speed) for about 3000-4000km
don't really recognize rough idle.. except when i had unpluged my air pump switch, cuz of weird MASSIVE sound.
but when i start the car in like a day, rpm peaks to between 2000-2500 and wouldn't settle down to 900 for about 10-15 min. so i gotta warm it up for quite a long time.

starting at 2500rpms for a few minutes is probably the AWS(accelerated warmup)

^^^ ahhh yes, the good old AWS - try starting your car in gear and see if it has an effect.

You should be able to blip the throttle to disengage the Automated Warmup Sequence. The FD was DESIGNED to immediately raise rpms to 3000 for a while in order to light off the pre-cat.

The rotary is no different than any other engine as far as "does it need a rebuild".
If it runs smooth and doesn't smoke, it is fine. Unique things to the 13BREW are the twin turbos which can and do start blowing oil, which will cause heavy smoke of a blue-ish color. Your coolant seals (called 'O' rings) deteriorate and will start allowing coolant to enter the combustion chambers, causing a HEAVY white smoke that is very sweet smelling (do NOT confuse normal condensation for this!) and of course in extreme and typical cases, the apex or corner seals will fail usually due to running lean and having detonation or "pinging" happen and THAT is usually the true death of a turbocharged rotary. Most people don't go looking for trouble, so if the car is running fine then just drive it, knowing that as with all high-mileage cars a rebuild is not an "if" but a "when". The deal is, a high mileage 13BREW has between 75K and 100K miles on it, where a modern piston engine in Toyotas and Hondas and several European cars will go several hundred thousand miles with proper maintenance.

hey thanks for the info..
however, well.. it's really hard to tell weather the smokes are blue or white..
however, i do smell a burned oil occasionally.
and having a bad oil leak in my return liner as well..
when I start my car in a long time, and warm it up for a bit, i see this smoke coming out from deep inside of my motor even if i haven't run the motor yet (i would probably have to say that the smokes are coming out from between the coupler (intercooler pipe) and my air pump). smells like burned oil.. I don't really know if it smells sweet or not though..
and if i drive it for a bit, i see this smoke coming out again..
well.. a lot of ppl are saying that it is cuz of dropped oil on my turbo.
but i doubt that.
well.. i'm taking this fd for a full inspection in this week..
they should be able to find it out..
and one more thing...
u said the rotary motor could handle up to 75k to 100k miles.
what happenes if the fds with only 20-30k miles on it got below 80 on its engine compression check..
does it seriously need engine rebuild right away..?

below 80 means your motor could completely die at any moment.

How did you check the compression? was it below 80 on all 3 faces? Front and/or Rear?
