Thinking of getting an RX-7 from a used cars place - opinions needed

I am thinking of getting a used RX-7 from a used cars place around me for $12,000

Car has 100,000 mi on it and it looks clean in the pictures. Didn't get to see it in person yet.

What really interests me is that, they will offer me a warranty on the car if I buy it. If I do get a warranty, would it be a good idea to pick it up?

They won't give any details about the warranty until I go there in person though.

What are your thoughts everyone? Thanks for the help!

100K miles would have to be in top notch condition to pay $12K. I paid $13.5K for my car with 74K on chassis and 4K on the new re-man engine.

Warranty would definately be a good thing on this car, especially if it's on the original engine. Find out what modifications were done if any, and get as much previous owner and maintanence information as possible. Also ask to to have a compression check done on the engine. If the car doesn't have a boost gauge, bring one with you and some vacuum hose and try to get a reading on the boost pattern.

Aside from all the usual verifying that it's been maintained, etc, 12K is a lot for a 100K car. I bought my 93 with 65k and a bad tranny for $9500 just this year. You also may want to verify that they really will warranty the car. Almost all warranty underwriters have an exclusion for twin turbo vehicles, not to mention rotaries.

Get ALL the fine print of the warranty, see EXACTLY what parts it covers and what it does NOT cover. Twin turbos are usually not covered, RX7s are usually not covered, and under powertrain, it usually does not mention "rotors" or "rotor housings" etc, ie, it only specifies that it covers piston engines. Also, if it says that the warranty requires work to be done ONLY at that facility, you have two problems: 1) distance, and 2) the fact that they prob. have no idea how to work on the car. if after all this, the warranty indeed checks out, let ME know. I'll buy that car lol, even for $12K (I'll make that money back in a few months w/ the warranty LOL). An FD w/ a warranty is a GOLDMINE IMO.

Personally I would never buy any car from a used car lot. Look for a private seller who has taken good care of his car.

Used car lots are crooked, watch out or make sure to bring a mechanic that know about FD's and have him check it out for you. bring a boos gauge to when you check it out

I'm w/ you about buying a 7 from a used car lot...but I'm only in it for the warranty man. A warranty that actually covers everything is striking gold...

I bought my car from a used car lot and was very suspicious/skeptical, too. I told the guy up front that I would not consider buying the car unless he had it checked out by a local specialist (Rick's Rotary). He brought it there and Rick checked over the car. He found some issues (which helped me with the price), but overall, all of the important stuff (particularly the recent installation of a Mazda reman) was there. The inspection cost the dealer $130, but it also got him a buyer for that car.

The way I see it, no matter who you buy from (unless you really know the person well), there are things that you will do and should do regardless. I did a pretty major overhaul of my car as soon as I got it (silicon hose job, fluids flush, fuel filter, injector cleaning, AST, etc). However, I would have done that to any car that I had purchased.
