thinking of doing rebuild myself. advise?...
i think my motor is going out on my 7
im weighing the pros and cons of trying to do the rebuild myself, since im not made of money. im no master mechanic but i do have good mechanical skills and a friend that is a mechanic so i might try it for the learning experience. im thinking of going with 3mm seals in the process so i will have a local machine shop mill the rotors for the new seals, im also a quality control tech for a local japanese factory so i have access to all gages needed to make sure everthing is in spec.
so for my questions. can anyone tell me the best place to get the rebuild parts and approx. cost for everything?
i would like to do a street port while im in there, so what are the ports enlarged to (how many mm)?
i have a factory service manual to do all this with but is there any good tips guides out there that i can buy or videos on how to do all this to help me along?
thanks for your time any help you can give would be great!

I would say go for it, especially if you have a mechanic friend. I think most people shy away because its a hassle, not necessarily because its hard. When mine finally goes pop, I will definetly rebuild myself.
I think atkins rotary has a kit, and I would recommend their rebuild dvd. heard lots of good stuff about it...

If you are doing it to save money, I'd say don't (as it will cost more money/time to do it twice than to pay a professional to do it right the first time).
If you are doing it to have your own project and to learning more about the car, I'd say go for it but expect delays.

cool thanks guy. i think my coolant seal had been going out (from what ive read) and on saturday i noticed my power slowly going away then by the time i got home my turbo would not spool. i looked at the turbos and they seemed to be as they were about 3 months ago when i bought the car. i noticed that i had to add some coolant and it had been starting rough and running like crap for a few minutes with some white smoke. i expected to be replacing the motor just not this quick (300 miles after i bought it)
oh well.
oh well.
If you plan to build it yourself buy every DIY video there is and a factory service manual. Watch the videos repeatedly and read the entire section on disassembly and assembly in the FSM.
We have botched DIY rebuilds sent to us nearly every week and it is always something simple that the owner did incorrectly, yet ends up causing $100's or even $1000's in damage.

Do not have some random machine shop mill the rotors for 3mm, as they will surely screw it up. If you really want to do it yourself, i recommend keeping the rotors 2mm and simply polishing the port the runners.
