Which of these oil filters do you use?

1. Mazda (~$5)
2. Mobil 1 (~$12)
3. Bosch (~$6)

I never knew Mobil 1 was that pricey until I saw it at Auto Zone.

Which one do you recommend using?

Thanks.

Dan.

Word of mouth says that the OEM filters are the best, and that Fram (~$6.50) are the worst. However, I have never seen any numbers to back this up.

I use the puralator "pure 1." It's the pretty blue one. My parts manager told me that they make the filters for Toyota, and since until just recently there wasn't a Mazda dealership in P'cola, I've been using those.

on another note, i find that the oil filter is considerably small eventhough the oil capcity is as big as any 4-banger. Is there another car that uses teh same thread/gasket size that would fit on our cars that has a bigger filter capacity??

you can use the 2nd gen filters, on your 3rd gen. They are about twice as long.

I currently use Mobil 1 but would use K&N if it was readily available. I do not mind paying double since oil is so extremely crutial in our engines.

I'm using OEM right now but I noticed when I got my oil changed at the local oil place one time, they used a bigger one, the OEM one seems so puny. I change the oil quite often since I don't drive the car a lot so it never gets dirty, but it seems like the OEM one is too small, but I like the fact it has a drainback valve, not all generic brands have one. As far as the filtering goes, the oil never gets dirty enough for that to be a big issue for me.

Lots of times the oil change places puts in the wrong fileter, but it just happens to fit. I use a fram filter, i dont think theres much of a difference to be had in a oil filter. Fram makes the penzoil filter. I drain my oil every 500 miles and change the filter every once in a while, but no more than 2k.

Mobil 1 and K&N both have anti-drainback valves as well.

If you look at the part number for the OEM 3d gen oil filter, it starts with a "B". You can order the OEM filter with the same number, but starting with "G" and it is a little taller. Usually the same price, and I figure that it probably has more filter area. I've been told that the
"B" filter is the same as the Miata filter and the "G" filter is the same as the MPV filter. Never checked it out though, since I don't care

I always wanted to do a remote mount Canton-Mecca oil filter, but never got off my butt to do the job. Not sure where I'd mount the filter though. Also, I see that Greddy makes a filter relocation kit, but I haven't seen one installed, so I don't know where they end up putting the filter...

I use AC Delco, Purolator, Purolator Pure-ONE, and I just got a K&N for my next change. These filters seemed to be among the best in that oil filter comparison where the guy took all the filters apart. I also heard the AC Delco camp was really **** about filtering performance*, so that bumped the AC Delco up on my list. There are a bunch of good options, but auto store shelves seem to be stocked mostly with bad ones (Fram, etc.). Many aftermarket filters have anti-drainback valves these days. I am sure the OEM filters are an excellent choice, but I don't think they are the only good option, and I find these other ones to be easier to obtain.

I use the filters listed for FCs as they are larger and fit just fine. They are a little harder to change, but it seems like it is worth it. My daily driver uses the same filter, too, so I just buy them periodically and use whatever I have on hand during a change.

There is a different OEM filter specified for installation in new engines (like when your FD rolled off the lot, or that you might use after a rebuild). It is larger than the normal one. Perhaps that is the G filter that artowar2 posted about.

rx7will, it might be cheaper and just as good to change the filter often and keep the same oil.

* This was an "inside" account, but didn't seem like a sales pitch by the context. On a related note, I recently saw a document where an ex-employee of Performance Friction noted that the company was "fanatical" about quality, if you are in the market for brake pads.

I use the Pure 1 as well. Also always go with the MX6 Filters. To me the bigger size actually helps install/grip.

LOL 2 for the price of 1.

I use the Fram. Not by choice however. For me to get anything other than the Fram I would have to buy off base...which would cost me $20 for an oil filter!

**** that...I'll spend the $6 for the fram..or whatever the hell the cost is.

oem is probably the best to use, but i've had good results with WIX filters as well..........they have a bit more capacity than the oem and they have enough clearance to fit properly. they do not have the anti-drain back valve, so twist it on quickly

I think having the best oil filter only matters if you're keeping the oil in there for a long time. I would think that if you change your oil frequently (i do every 1000-1500 miles) having the absolute best filter doesnt really matter since you're always going to be switching to a fresh supply of oil.
