Thermostat Questions

Ok, so I think that I have finally diagnosed my overheating problem. The car does not lose coolant, smoke and bubble dont appear in the filler neck. This leads me to believe that the thermostat has failed. My question is; which way does the thermostat fail? Does it normally fail open or closed. Because if it fails closed then my problem is solved. (hopefully)

Thanks,

Matthew Walsh.

hey matt its ryan, yea so about the thermostat. Thremostats usually fail due to the fact that there stuck closed. When your coolant reaches a certin tempature it will open to allow coolant by and if it is stuck closed you have a problem cause there is a restriction in your cooling system. Its suppose to open at a certin degree and then close itself when the tempature falls again. Its main purpose is to mantian normal operating tempature and if its stuck it cannot do this and thus your car is overheating. If you want to find out if that it is for sure, remove the thremostat from the car, put it in a pot of water and boil it and you should see it open up, if not then its bad and you need another one. I just ordered one for my car last week at www.SRmotorsports.com i think it was like 20 bucks

Use an OEM t-stat. The cheap auto parts store one's tend to fail.

I have actually already ordered it from Malloy. Wow what a breath of fresh air when compared to the Mazda dealerships in my area. I think the part was about 12$, shipped next day to my door.
