Planning to wrap my dp soon. Anyone know good brand or place to buy some? How much length should I get?

 

get at least 50 feet of 2 inch. wrap it a few times with the extra or wrap your mp too

Have you considered having it ceramic coated?

If you're going to wrap it, you can buy the stuff at Summit Racing. There is also a paint you can buy to apply over the wrap, to keep moisture from getting in and the wrap from flapping around over time.

 

I picked up about 40 feet of generic 2" asbestos wrap from the same place I got my 300k4 belt. I got them at a local truck and industrial machinery parts store.

 

Another member and I split a roll. I don't remember how many feet it was now, but even then, I had enough to overlap WAY more than the instructions said. It was hard getting the first few inches from the manifold wrapped though.

 

I'd look into having the pipe ceramic coated. You'll end up with a much higher quality result, and the price isn't too bad from what I've seen.

probably but by the time it does do that and actually rust thru, your engine probally would have already gone (actually, i guess it depends on where you live. if your in someplace like arizona or nevada where there is very very low humidty and rain, probally not) personnaly i would not worry about it too much

BTW: Cermic coating does work but does it work as well as thermo wrap? i would say no, espeically if you really layer this stuff on like me (I have 8 layers ) I can grab my DP with my bare hand I have never been high enough to try that with a cermic coated dp haha. well that and by the time i got my hand near enought to actually grab the pipe, instinct told me the near glowing dp would probably hurt me pretty good

 

I agree. I wrapped my mild-steel DP early this spring and live in the mid-west, where humidity is an issue in the summer. The other day I partially unwrapped the DP a few inches to check, after this was mentioned as a concern. Just a little surface rust, hardly more than what was present BEFORE wrapping. Well worth it IMO, as it significantly reduced under-hood temps.

 

Why not do both? Get it coated and wrapped. It doesn't cost all that much and keeps the engine bay temperatures down.

 

Well the downpipe is on the car already. It was a bitch of a job to put it in (ebay). So I don't really want to take it off to coat. I know its going to be a pain in the *** to wrap it on the car, but oh well. I was looking around summit racing and this was all I could find http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...t=thermal+wrap

 

to tell you the truth, its not really that much of a bitch to wrap, even on the car. i would just suggest you to get something to cover your arms becuase it gets very itchy becuase the fiberglass gets stuck in your arms.

 

See Baking Muffins on My Downpipe....get the DEI wrap...it smells good when it's burns the first time.

I had my DP ceramic coated and it helped but still had heat issues. I wrapped it lastnight and noticed a big difference...Worth the money and time.

 

Also, it may be coincidence...But at the same PSI the car seems to pull harder than when it was unwrapped...maybe a combination of the heated exhaust air and the cooler intake temps from the lower under hood temp.
