is there a way to tell if a trany is 94 and up?

just wondering if thers special #'s or watever to see if a tranny is 94 and up.

Not that I know of - the trannies are all pretty much the same. I believe later production trannies incorporated the 5th gear synchro fix, though.

Check the part number. If the 94 tranny is different, it should have a different part number.

can you explain more on the 5th gear synchro fix ?

Before I install my JDM tranny, I'd like to see if it has it . . .

Mazda beefed up the 5th gear synchro and changed the spring and select spindle to make it trickier to mis-shift into 5th. The problem was, if you were in 2nd gear at redline and went to shift into 3rd, you very likely would shift to 5th, which was really hard on the 5th gear synchro and would eventually break it. So, they updated the synchro to make it tougher and also made it harder to mis-shift.

Dunno how to tell if it's been done or not - part of the tranny would have to be taken apart. Might want to PM Dgeesaman - he's the tranny guru.
