Is there something wrong with my stock turbo?
Hey guys
I'm new to the forum. I just bought a 94 Rx7 a couple of months ago, and it seems as if something is wrong with my turbo. At times it would work perfectly fine, but other times it seems to jolt and stutter as the turbo start to kick in. Can someone give me a diagnosis of the problem I seem to be experiencing. Thanks in advance.

There are dozens or perhaps hundreds here who can help. They can all be found under the "search" button at the top right corner. Instant replies; the best kind. Good luck with your fix.

Are you sure the jolt/stutter happens when the turbos kick in and not when you are pulling from a stop?
What RPM does this happen? Does this happen in any particular temperature or when you're in traffic?
Any other mods on your car?

The first thing you really should do is get yourself a really good boost gauge. The boost gauge will tell you how much boost your FD is getting at a certain point. After you get the boost gauge, then you should really be able to locate the problem with your boost.
A few easy things to check:
1) lower and upper intercooler hoses. Make sure there are no cracks on them.
2) Y-Pipe. Make sure that it is properly on and that there is no cracks on the Y-pipe.

You likely will get a hesitation at 3500rpm. If you happen to be cruising just below that and stomp on it, that hiccup is pretty pronounced. Normal turbo transition is at 4500 rpm.

Also check your Y-pipe coupler if you're convinced of there actually being a problem. Search a lot before coming back, it works for me. Boost gauge is very important.

I'm not sure it is possible to experience jolt and shutter from faulty boost. I think you have other issues (fuel, ignition), but if you can get hold of a boost guage then we can tell what is happening with the turbos. Even a $20 vacuum/pressure test gauge commonly available at parts stores then we can tell what is happening with the turbos. You'll want one of these test gauges anyway. It should come standard with every FD purchase.
