Anything I should really check for, that are common problems?

The car is in great condition and the interior is like new. I'll either bring the car to paisley automotive since his shop is 10 minutes from my house, or go to my dad's friend who owns a mazda dealer to get the motor checked out.

To do the Compression check (and it is very important to have it done) on a rotary requires a special tester - have a MAZDA dealer or certified rotary Mechanic do it. the auto has a HOLD feature tha lockes in the selected gear AND engages the torque converter lock-up test it by selecting the "S" position and pushing the HOLD buton (the small one on the top front of the Lever) it should engage second gear (and light the HOLD warning in the tach) and you should be able to feel engine braking effect (Torque Conv Locked Up) if not the tq conv LockUp is not functioning. also if the HOLD light is flashing it indicates a problem with the trans computer and/or that the trans is low on fluid or overheating.
