Question Temp Guage (pls don't bash me... I searched!!)

I want to install a more accurate water temp guage. I guess autometer. Not too expensive, and looks okay. Question is: With an electronic guage do I:

A: Run another wire to another sender?
B: Tap the existing sender wire?
C: Disconnect stock guage and use that wire?

I know... I'm an idiot. I just don't wanna **** up my FD. Thanks!

Your search didnt help you because you spelled gauge wrong. I'm not flaming or anything, that's probably just what happened.

i don't think electrical autometer is the way to go, there is only a 90 degre range. You won't be able to tell what is the temp since the needle will always stay at the same place. If you want to stay with autometer, get a mechanical or if you want to stay electrical, go with greddy.

I've heard of people tapping into the stock sender using an aftermarket gauge, but I'm not sure how they managed it because the sender signals would be different, but that would be very good if you can get the calibration right. In any case, its not the stock sender that causes the "stay in one place" nature of the stock gauge. I don't recommend mechanical because you don't want to have fluid going through the dash when you can just run a wire. The option I went with was tapping into the water pump housing with the aftermarket sensor, so the aftermarket gauge is totally independant of the stock gauge.

I just tapped into the flat part of the filler neck for my autometer electric gauge. I know auto meter is sacrilige to many folks, but for 40 bucks and one wire I have a gauge that matches my stock gauges and my boost gauge and shows how hot it's running. One or two, or hell, even five degrees difference doesn't bother me. I just wanted to know how hot it was getting in traffic (210) to see if I needed to do the fan mod. Which I did and now stay around 180.

Nathan Kwok,

Yeah... I decided on the electric, so I dont have the Water past the firewall.... And your info on the sender signals being different was why I was a little shy about tapping the wire. Thanks for the input..

P'cola FD,
Yeah... I really need to monitor the stop and do temps... Don't want to spend too much on gauges. I haven't heard really bad things about autometer.. Thanks.

well actually, you don't run coolant in the car, it is a special kind of fluid that is in the tube.

just go to autometer.com and you will see what i am talking about not being very accurate. i don't know how you can say if the needle is on 180 or 210, it is just too close.

personnaly, i don't think electric autometer gauge will help much. Yep, it is harder to route the mechanical but you will gain a lot of precision. If only they would have made a full sweep with a better range (ends at 210, DAH!)

What do you mean it ends at 210? My gauge reads up to 250.

I installed the autometer electrical gauge - the 100 - 250 deg one (model no.3337). Im very pleased with it. Theres loads of needle movement between 180 and 210 !!
Mine sits nicely at 180 driving around, and 210 in traffic at which point the fans come on - which is EXACTLY right . Thats accurate enough for me! Wiring was a doddle too. I used the hex-head blank just to the right of the filler neck for the sender (fits a treat)

I say go with the a digital guage, I have the Nordskog water and oil temp guages you will see any temp changes instantly intead of guessing by looking at a needle.I put my water temp sender on the thermostat housing outlet on the flat spot and I tapped my oil pan drain plug for the oil temp sender.Plus the amber lighting matches the stock guages perfectly and you have the option to make them dimm when you turn youre lights on.

Thanks guys... I'm trying to do a zillion things at once, so the Autometer saves $$. I guess I'll start with Autometer, to see if I can get a feel for the movement... and if not, I'll upgrade. I know I should probably just get the better ones first, but I already got Autometer boost and air/fuel!!
Hopefully with the Koyo and fan mod I wont be too scared of the temps!!

I know everyone is on the Autometer bashing wagon, but if you go to their web site you'll see they have a full range of products (from less to more accurate). They have meters with various sweeps through a number of different temp ranges.

What I like about the Greddy gauge is that the sender can screw into the housing in place of the stock sender.
