Grinding noise when gas is applied and clutch pedal is out.(Trying to move!) But no move!! ..... Put the car (the rear end) in the air. Put the trans in gear(first or whatever) See if you can rotate your tires. Have someone hold the other side tire and try that one as well. It should not move.( you should feel like your trying to bump start the car) For an added test go under the car and hold the driveshaft and try the same thing with the tires. Lastly before removal, Drain the fluid and look for metal shavings. I had a **** load of shavings when i popped my diff. Go with the KAZZ 1.5 if you need one. P.S. .... I shouldn't have to say this but when you jack the car up, USE JACK STANDS !!!!!! Don't need you getting squished!! (Lecture over! Haha!!)

Just leave it in park. I think it would also be the same in drive , or reverse etc.... The drive shaft test is a for sure "same test" as a manual.(Hold onto the driveshaft and try turning the tires) Sorry, park may not work for the test. Never worked on an auto yet! Anyone else?

I saw your other post in reference to a "whistling" noise being diagnosed as a bad diff. Do you mean a "squealing" noise? That could be it, but typically, and as mentioned, you should hear a clunking or grinding from worn out or broken gears. Another possiblility and something you should look into are bad wheel bearings.
