Swapping out tranny need advice

My tranny is scratching a bit when I shift from 1st to 2nd. Also, if I am not very careful when shifting, I get a small amount of grinding while going into 5th. These problems are more pronounced when the car is cold.

Does this necessarily mean that my tranny is toast?

I ask because my tranny was having issues about 1k miles ago. However, Rotary Performance said it was just a loose spring or bushing in the quick shifter, and that I had no 5th gear syncro issues. They also put redline in it at the time. After being reparied it ran smoothly for about 700 miles than started acting up again.

So what do you think does my tranny need a rebuild? could that 1st to 2nd grind be due to a bad quick shifter?

For reference, I wish I knew what a good tranny was supposed to feel like on a FD. Because I will tell you that mine feels like ****.

Also, I have found a used tranny out of a 94 that has about 64K miles on it, and have decided to swap it out with mine. I will be buying this tranny no matter what, but am really curious, what everyone's experience has been with their trannies.

sounds like syncros.

redline or any other syn is often used to give the tranny to try to fix syncro problems.

When cold the fluid would affect the performance. I had a rx7 where i couldn't even shift into second until about 2 min of driving. It was fine after than. Syn is better for the cold.

So are you saying that the Synthetic masks the problem?

Have you pulled your shifter to see the bushing inside? Is your shifter tight? Mine kept coming loose untill I used longer bolts and locktight. What short shifter are you useing? Any short shifter will make your trany feel notchy and if you switch from the heavy stock shifter **** to a light after market shifter **** that will compound the diferent feel. Keep me informed. I don't want to sell you a trany if all you need is a shifter bushing.

Your tranny is sold, TO ME!!!!!! You can consider it a done deal.

Mine has 144K on it, and has probably had it.

I have a weighted shift **** as you mentioned, so that is not causing the issue.

I do not like the way my short shifter feels. (it is made by top speed) and it is, as you mentioned, nothcy. However, I do not have anything to compare this feel to, as I have never driven one with a stock shifter.

Are you including the stock shifter with yours ?

Really where I am most concerned is with that grind from 1st to 2nd. I do not see how a short shifter could cause that problem. I am also concerned with how tough it is to shift in all gears when cold? This is what is making me believe that the tranny is going. Should I not worry about this conditon?

ahhh, so you're the guy who bought the tranny. I'm having the same problem with more pronounced 5th gear grind. I do mean "PRONOUNCED". It happens about 8 out of 10 times I shift into 5th. I replaced the fluid when I put in the short shifter (pettit) and it didn't seem to help the 5th gear problem but it did seem to help 1 to 2. BTW, my tranny only has 57K on it. Ho Hum.... I guess I'll keep scouring the for sale section.
