Strange Cooling Behavior
Strange Cooling Behavior
Hey All -
I installed my Koyo Rad about 3 months ago. Ever since then, whenever I turn my AC on, my car acutally runs about 30 degrees HOTTER.
I have the fan mod done, and when I run the fans by themselves I run at a cool 180 degrees. Once I turn on the AC (and the fans kick it up a speed), the engine creeps up to 210 (or higher). How does this make ANY sense?
Can anyone help me explain this?
Thanks!
Steve

Running the AC does add extra heat load to the system. The radiator gets air that's already heated by the AC condensor. Are outside temps pretty warm where you are? Does your AC work well - cool down quickly, etc.?

Well, the compressor is causing more load on the engine, so that's part of it, and the consendor is pre-heating the air that's coming through your radiator so that doesn't help either. My car does the same thing. I've found that if it's < 85 degrees outside, the high speed of the fans with A/C on compensates and my temps stay (sort of) in check, but if it's 90 or so temps will creep until I have to shut off the A/C.
Basically ducting and a better water to coolant ratio is all I can suggest.

Just confirming that my temps also go up, but generally only ~10 deg. F. with the AC on during stop and go (with a Fluidyne). The hotter ambient temps, the larger the difference seems to be. There is virtually no difference from non-AC temps when on the highway.
30 deg. F seems a bit much, but like nearly everything else on this car, nothing seems to be universal. Your mods, state of tune, driving habits etc. all might play in to it.
