waste of time. they usually come out in not much better shape than before the rebuild. either get efini twins or BNRs if you still want to stay with twins, otherwise look into a single setup.

I rebuilt my turbo which cost $1,936.00 because exhaust turbine housings were not usable.
I changed those housings.
In most case, when you disassemble the turbo, you will see a huge crack in the turbine housing.

I have done it. They did not last long.
I did everything right - balanced, bead-blasted, rebuild kit, etc. I think the shafts were just too worn.
If you want to save some money, try ordering rebuilt cartridges from BNR. I think Brian will sell you a rebuilt set of stockers for under $500.
It's complicated enough to put them back together straight, much less rebuild them. Make sure and mark everything. I cannot stress enough the importance of getting it back together right. It will be impossible to install them if they are put together sloppy.
There is a thread (do a search) by arexseven (I think) that describes the process in extreme detail with many pics. But it also tells about his eventual failure.
I have rebuilt other turbos with ease, but these are very precise. I would not do it again.
Let me know if you have any questions about doing it.

pretty much confirms everything I've been told by various (experienced) parties
as Rich indicated, the BNRs are the way to go if you want to stay with the twin set-up, it's getting increasingly difficult to find good used stockers and the '99s are more $$$ than BNRs....will the 99's outlast BNRs? that is the $2500 question; in terms of performance, I don't think there is much comparison
from what I have seen and read about, even getting everything balanced during the rebuild, the shafts may already be worn down and they still won't be as good as new turbos, plus the money you spend on rebuilding stock twins or getting 99' spec twins still won't get you as much power as a less expensive BNR or single setup
Guys,
I thought Pettit used to rebuild the stock Hitachis, but I'm not sure if they are still doing this or not. The only downside to the BNRs (other than cost) is the fact that you can no longer run the airpump (for those of us still looking or needing to pass emissions). If I'm wrong please enlighten me, but yes... if emissions are not of a concern, BNRs are defintely better than going with '99 spec twins (IMO).
