Stock (?) turbo turbine picture (pic inside)

Ok guys, I've just put a y-pipe on my car, and was wondering if this is the stock turbo, or if the previous owner has upgraded twins.

I thought I saw a picture somewhere of the stock twins, and they only had 1 of the blades, instead of looking double stacked.

Thanks,
Ben

It is absolutely, positively a stock Hitachi H-12 Turbo Compressor Wheel w/ original Compressor Wheel Nut.

Turbos can't really be "upgraded" (or to perform superior to stock factory specs) if you utilize the same Wheel/Shaft combo. But they can be rebuilt with new seals, bearings, and o-ring to perform like a new unit. Turbo exhaust manifolds can be ported via the Wastegate portal which will/should maintain safe and tolerable boost levels.

Thanks for informing my new'b self. I thought you could modify the blades to make it perform differently, but again, that must be my newb-ism.

I've heard there's a process called "Clipping" the blades. But i'm not sure iit enhances the flow rate/boost capability of a stock unit.

you can clip the turbine wheels to make the boost efficiency range move higher but those are on the other side of the turbo...actually on the twins they are sort of inside.

It's hard to believe that by clipping (cutting and making them smaller)) the blades, they would somehow produce above stock level boost. Boost is produced on the Compressor side. As we all know, Turbos spool by Turbine Wheels spun by the engine exhaust flow. The smaller the turbine wheel/blades are, the less amount of exhaust flow they'll be able to catch?? This should create a slower spool, thus creating lower boost??

Clipping the exhaust wheel is removing some of the material (at an angle) which will allow more exhaust to bypass the turbine in extreme conditions. The reason this is done is that when u are using your big upgraded turbo at a high psi and RPM, the exhaust cannot get out fast enough. So the clipping procedure will allow a little more flow at the expense of lag.

So clipping does nothing to "enhance" spooling capability/higher boost on stock Hitachis??

It does do a little bit but not like it does on a LARGE turbo. On the Hitachis here are a few mods ive done to mine that have helped.. Of course this is a custom one off type thing which I spent INCREDIBLE amounts of money on doing because its for a project car and I do stuff like that on project cars..

Full Parallel
Upgraded bearings
Clipped blades
fully blueprinted and ballanced
ported wastegate to 1.4inches *maximum posible*

planning to run 17-18lbs.

got any pics of your moded turbo?? im interested... im still trying understand how clipping will enhance performance. i understand that it will let some exhaust PAST the blades, but that wont help the turbo to spin faster... it would spin slower due to a worse seal between the blades and the housing correct? maybe im just not understanding....

with the blades being clipped it allows gas by, yes but at the same time it doesnt allow all of it out to the exhaust.. same stays in, so basically the turbo can remain in a certain efficency range without having to spin faster to produce the same ammount of boost. Theres a great book that goes in to detail on many different elements in turbos.. Its called "Turbochargers" by Hugh MacInnes.. I highly recommend it.. great source of information.

If you guys want to see the car go to rotary revolution. RX Tuner has payed my way to come out to show the car off before it even hits the press.. Again this car is a RX Tuner exclusive so this is the first chance the public is going to get to see the car.
