Stock looking switches
Stock looking switches
Yo,yo,yo
I'm gonna be doing the fan mod next weekend (grounding of the loose wire off the ECU). I want a nice looking switch that will blend in with the stock interior. I saw some posts of either having this switch mounted within a gauge cluster, but would rather have a push button switch in one of the empty holes on the armrest (like where the rear defrost is). Anyone have links / prices / pics?
Thanks,
Michael

I've got mine mounted under the dash just next to the little vent that blows air on you *****. It's out of sight so it didn't matter what it looked like. I bought it from radio shack and it looks pretty good when you see it. It's a small round rocker switch. I'll be getting a different one (will look the same but will light up when on) and will fit in the same mounting hole.
Use An OEM Fog Light Switch for the Fan Mod
The cleanest look is to use the FD OEM fog light switch which fits in one of the unused switch slots on the center console. You can buy a fog light switch new from the Mazda dealer for around $50 or check around for used ones at salvage yards or others doing a parting out for around $25. Here's the directions for understanding and wiring in the switch.
There are four wires on the fog light switch. Two are larger gauge, the white and the red with yellow stripe. Two are smaller gauge, the red with green stripe and the red with blue stripe.
Only the two larger gauge wires are actually switched on and off by the switch. These are the two wires to use for the fan mod. Use one wire to go to ground and the other to where you are wiring into the fan circuit such as the version of the fan mod that goes to the relays. It doesn't matter which you choose.
The two smaller gauge wires are not operated by the switch. These two wires are the hot and ground wires for the amber illuminating diode (bulb) in the switch itself. The illuminating diode glows only when the head lights/panel lights are turned on. This illuminating diode is NOT a light to tell you the switch is in the on/closed position. The red with blue stripe is the hot and the red with green stripe is the ground. You do not have to hook-up these two wires for the fan mod to work. However, if you want the foglight switch (now the fan mod switch) to illuminate with the other panel lights then connect the red with green stripe wire on the foglight switch to the red with green stripe wire on the rear window defroster switch which happens to be close by on the console panel. Do the same with the red with blue stripe wires. Now you will have a fan mod switch that illuminates with all the other panel lights.
One other word of advice. Remember that the black plastic console and the black plastic radio/heater fascia can be scratched very easily. Take precautions to handle them carefully.
