Hello Rx7 Club. My stock 93 FD R1 clutch is slipping big time and is need of being replaced. The car is only at 40k miles. There is an auto shop on a local base here in WA where I work that will do the labor and put in the part I provide. I believe they said it is a 5 hour job at $70 per hour.
Anyway, I have decided after doing much reading that Exedy is a good brand to go with. The problem I am having is actually deciding which clutch I want to get put in. I am looking at three of their clutches.

There is the EXEDY KMZ01 OEM Replacement Clutch Kit they provide that is roughly $292.95 on amazon, $250 on ebay.

Secondly, EXEDY Stage 1 Organic Clutch Kit 10802, $436.53 on amazon, $442.74 on ebay. It has a torque Capacity of 310 ft-lbs. This clutch has some good reviews from people on this forum who are running stock.

And third, they have a Stage 2 Cerametallic Clutch Kit 10900, $555.64 on amazon, $557 on ebay. It has a torque capacity of 352 ft-lbs.

I know that I am running stock and that Stage two is probably overkill. I have done some Autocross with it in the past, but use it 99% of the time on the streets. I do plan on adding more power in the near future.

Here is my dilemma, EXEDY is having a garage sell on the 10900 Stage two clutch. I contacted them via email and they are willing to sell the clutch for $304, plus tax and shipping. That is $250 less. Almost the same price as the OEM clutch they offer. It seems like a great deal. I just want to know that I will still be able to drive this thing with no serious problems. I am keeping the stock flywheel in. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Especially if you have the Stage 2 clutch.

Already read that one a few days ago. Thanks. And my subject is more about the fact that the clutch was on sale.

 

If you are willing to live with the increaded pedal pressure then I would get the stronger clutch and save the money. If you do not think you will need the extra clamping force and want a smoother clutch engagement and lower pedal pressure then spend the extra money and get one of the other clutches.

I am unsure what you want to know if you have already read the thread I linked you to.

 

For what its worth, I think I am going to go with the Stage one. I don't need to overkill it and I think I will be happier with the decision. Thanks for your input.

Stage 2. I'm sure it's completely driveable and you save $250. Seems like a no-brainer to me

 

Hey Douglas, what base are you talking about? JBLM mayhaps? I'm actually stationed here at JBLM with 4th Brigade. I've seen a red FD cruising in the Tacoma area, up and down I5. You maybe?

 

Just to further muddy the waters, you could also try the RP OEM replacement clutch kit offered through RX7.com for about $349.95

Rotary Performance | FD Clutch

It's basically an OEM replacement kit, that they claim holds 15% more power than stock. Just in case you were to throw on a 3" CB, DP, intake, etc. It'd be sufficient for weekend auto-x runs as well I'm sure.

 

considering Exedy now owns Daikin clutch it is actually OEM for mazda rotaries and uses the same materials that the original clutch used as OEM, RX8 OEM clutches come in an Exedy box.

All of this information came from amazon. I just found it interesting that the clamp load was much higher for the 10802HD kit vs. the 10802.

NAS Whidbey Island. My car hasn't left the island since I got here last month. So it wasn't me you saw.

 

The clutch kit came in the mail today. I also bought a SS clutch line from Racing Beat. Hopefully this is all the parts that I will need to give the Auto shop. Everything else they should have, right?

 

Just to follow up for future reference:
The clutch is in and works well. The only thing is that the pedal is stiffer and is not really that close to OEM as they said. Then again, I have never driven any other car that had a clutch past stage 1.

 

I'm in the market for a new clutch (10802HD) just wondering how you like it after driving it awhile.

 

i have the HD and maybe im getting old, but it feels too stiff for me. it felt a lot like ACT extreme PP pedal stiffness. i previously was running ACT HD pp and it felt alright, not too stiff and I wasnt able to get it to slip with 350 whp. anyway, i may swap back to a exedy stage 1 (non-HD) or OEM. anybody know how much power OEM will hold?

 

I have put about 1,500 miles on it so far. I have not raced it, only commuting.
On that note, it is great. I prefer the feel of the clutch over stock, and it is not too stiff. It actually feels normal to me. I recently drove a friends car, a Subaru, and they had a stock clutch in. It felt like I was pushing my foot through a tub of butter. Too soft. If you go with the the HD, you will not regret it due to the feel of the clutch. That I can assure you.

also I drove a stage 2 and it was tricky at first , But after a while any other car's light clutch felt so soft that it was awkward
