Stock ecu, HP and boost question

Hello gang.

Here is my question...I have a 93 FD with stock engine and turbos with about 75,000 miles. Only mods are a gutted precat, catback and K&N drop in. I am looking to open up the airbox but have a concern.

I have already seen her primary boost at .9 bars (13.1 psi) and am wondering whether to invest in a boost controller, new ECU or leave her alone. I do not have an air/fuel meter so don't know if I am running lean but she does seem to backfire on deceleration so I wouldn't think so. Am I living on borrowed time?

Also, pls enlighten me (i am a bit dense). If I improve both the air intake system and exhaust system I assume that I will see an improvement in hp. Here is the question - IF I have a boost controller and set it so that I don't exceed stock boost tolerance would I still have a HP increase????

Thanks to all.

Hey KMAOT, I think they want you to search. Also, I would definately install an AF meter so you can see what is going on, that's my next mod. Tom

You need to look into getting an aftermarket ecu or controlling boost. With the stock ecu, I would keep your boost at 10-11 psi, 12 would be pushing it. And yes, you will still have an increase in power, even at 10 psi, because you're still gettin increased airflow through the engine. I would control your boost or get an ecu before you open your intake.

Also, IMO, A/F gauges using the stock O2 sensor are worthless. For one, most A/F gauges don't even read rich enough for a turboed rotary. Secondly, the stock 02 sensor does not give accurate results at large throttle openings.

BTW, you will get small pops and backfires at deceleration, regardless of whether you're running lean at WOT or not.

I second on keeping our boost down to stock until you get an aftermarket ecu.

Ok - thanks for the input. At this point in time I don't think that an upgraded ECU is in the works....so I will have to get some smaller performance parts to keep her happy....And if anyone has some suggestions as to "bang for buck" gauges and parts and tricks pls feel free to elaborate. And if you have something to sell that may be effective....you may have a buyer.

thanks,
kmaot

I would recommend doing the Home Depot boost control mod, it will cost you $10 and keep your boost down/save your engine. Make one for the prespool and one for the boost control (wastegate), follow the instructions on the website and you will be good to go. I too had some crazy boost on my primary, I would get like 14-6-11 and this fixed that for me.. 12-10-12 rock solid now. I would post the link but I don't have it handy right now, perhaps someone else can help me out here.. do a search and you will come up with it.
