Stock Airbox Tube

I recently bought my car, stock, including a stock airbox. Off the left side is an outlet. It's up toward the front of the airbox. It's about a 1 inch outlet. When I got the car it had a hose hooked on here that went and dumped straight out. My question is, was this hose supposed to hook up to anything, or is it just a vent hose? And if so, is there any need for the vent hose to be there, versus just leaving it off?

Thanks.

Vent hose. I took mine off, and I've had no problems.

Good, thank you. I took mine off for the great weight savings it provided.
