steering wheel swap tomorrow

i did search a bit and found some info... what size is the steering wheel nut? does the airbag just snap off? i need a puller for the OE wheel? bought a neat MOMO carbon fiber wheel kind of fun doing something on my car not in the engine bay.

21mm nut
don't really need a puller. just wiggle it back and forth for a bit and it'll slowly release from the splines.
airbag unscrews from behind. 4 philips screws iirc.

IIRC, that nut was a 21mm and you will need a puller. Disconnect the battery ground before starting (airbag safety), unplug the airbag/horn/cruise electrical connectors and it was all pretty easy to remove. You probably already have the FSM, they cover airbag removal details in the Body Electric Manual (BEM), and the steering wheel removal itself in FSM section N (attached here).

Mine has 3, 10mm (heads) bolts that secure the airbag. They are at the 3,6 and 9 o'clock locations on the steering wheel covered by black rubber caps.

i leave the nut on a couple threads, and wiggle it back and forth to pop the spline loose, nut is so when it pops off you don't hit yourself with the wheel...

Try to get the old wheel as center as possible before you take it off completely.

All great points here.

I've removed many FD and FC steering wheels, never needed a puller. Impact gun off the 21mm nut (it's a Nyloc) then put on a few threads and pull and wiggle the wheel and it will pop off the splines.

I also typically mark a dot with a Sharpie at 12 o'clock on the splined shaft. It's easy to get the new wheel on one tooth over, anything that helps is welcome.

the good news is that a few firm pulls, the steering wheel wiggled, and off it did come. of course things are never that simple. a problem arrived in the form of this thing...

it seems like it needs to be removed so i can fit the adapter to the spline. it appears to be attached w 3 Phillips screws. i don't have cruise... do i remove it? also i will need to locate the hot pin for the horn. i assume it is in the blue fitting just out of the picture or?

another item is the flashing airbag light... i read somewhere that a resistor is needed

Also try and keep the clock spring setup in place without turning the wheel when the old wheel comes off.

my adapter will not seat into the splines as long as the "clock spring setup" is on the column

Horn is orange, airbag is blue, white connector is the cruise control.

You will need a resistor if you plan to remove the airbag.

That I do not know, I have not try to eliminate the airbag before, maybe it is in the FSM? Or someone who has done it can chime in.

so much for the steering wheel project being done today.

the MOMO adapter does not fit the FD. it has a wide diameter w a hot side pickup ring that is too wide to fit on the shaft as it runs into the electrics on the clock spring assembly. the MOMO guy tells me that their literature shows it works from 86 to 02. nope.

looks like it is another brand of adapter for me. after watching a few YouTube videos it looks pretty easy if you actually have the right adapter. i also have the Mazda Body Electrical Trouble Shooting Manual which has more than you need to know on the steering wheel assembly/electrics..

I don't believe you will find the resistance of the airbag in Section S. However, I think I used either a 1.8 or 2.2 ohm resistor. I would place the resistor underneath the dash on the steering column's blue connector, so you can keep the harness and connectors running up the column to the airbag/horn intact.

yes, i don't want to close out the airbag option by butchering the harness. i believe the adapter i am buying comes w a plug in resistor

I'm using the Momo hub adapter from a NA/NB Miata
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...otout-1118699/
Others have confirmed that this Momo and the Daikei work. Others have also commented that the FD and FC hub adapter has some fitment issues.
https://www.rx7club.com/interior-ext...ter-fd-664011/

Here's a good source for the Daikei for the Miata which will fit the FD: https://rev9autosport.com/daikei-boss-hub-kit.html
