Steering wheel and hub choice for fixed bucket

Hi all,

Just installed my fixed bride low max, and now I'm really struggeling to fit in, I will need to buy a new steering wheel and hub and perhaps a quick release to get my legs in easily.

I am 6 foot 2, and used to just fit in with the stock seat, now I am batteling. I am tracking the car so I want to keep the bucket.

Has any one my size found a good combination ?

Cheers Elliot

Just get a quick release adapter. Here's what I had:

DAIKEI Boss Hub Adapter for 1990-1997 Miata (it's the same as the Work's HUB so whichever one you can find)
NRG Steering Wheel Quick Release Adapter (not the slim adapter)

I would recommend a 350mm steering wheel if the car is driven on the street as anything smaller will block the dash. If the car is used primary on the track and not on the street, a 320 or 330 mm wheel would be an option.

the stock wheel is 380mm and i believe it is offset up by a few mm's.

when you go aftermarket, i like a 350-360mm wheel. i find 320mm is too small. i like a little dish, or a spacer, but you need to set that up for you.

I am 6'1 175. I'm using an OMP 330 Corsica... why 330? because I have long arms... and there's not enough room to maneuver in our small cars. I don't care about seeing the dash in my car while I'm on the track. My car is primarily a track car...but driving maneuverability is my main concern.. being comfortable in and out of turns is keen to me. Anyways, I'm using both NRG quick release 2.0 and hubs. Love them. No complaints. I also have a fixed bucket and am sitting all the way back against my fixed comp legal 6 point.

Cool

I'm 6'2', 205lbs. and I do track my car.
I have OEM seats, but run SCHROTH 4 point harness from roll bar and I have this NRG D-cut steering to make things easy.

The ST-009R-RS Series steering wheel is the perfect choice for that sporty look inside the cockpit. It features a flat bottom to increase the space between driver and steering wheel for a more comfortable driving. Constructed from luxurious soft supple leather with Red Stitching and top of the line materials. These 3 spoke units resemble the Formula 1 D-shaped style wheel to provide the best in both quality and performance.

Has any one had experience with the HKB Boss hub adapter? It states it requires the Kouki 40mm spacer. Is that some thing we have on the OEM steering wheel? Does the horn function still work?

I'm rocking a 330 Suede Sparco wheel now, and I love it.

I sit low enough in the car that it doesn't block the guages. I use the Miata hub mount, with a 1" spacer.

I have witnessed a steering wheel coming off while a club member was racing and have heard another story from one of our events where it happened.

Because of this, not having to find a place to toss the wheel (on dash, onto passenger/seat?), and for the cool factor I went with a flip up steering wheel hub instead when I put in my Brides.

I liked the Works Bell Rapfix GTC Hybrid best. It is a hybrid (duh) of the regular (street) GTC hub steering wheel bolt pattern and the race handle without the safety catch on the back. You can reach through the steering wheel front to unlatch it instead of snaking your hand around the back side.

-all edited up-

Here is where I found the GTC-Hybrid. Bought through Australia from Japan, but easy transaction.

http://www.tunersgroup.com/Online_St...TC_Hybrid.html

Regular street GTC

GTC-R for 3 bolt race pattern steering wheels
http://www.worksbell.co.jp/en/products/rapfix/gtc_r.htm

They also make 3 bolt to 6 bolt steering wheel adapters- can't find Works Bell one offhand, but found them on ebay

With a smaller wheel, I can't imagine why you need it to tilt or come out... it doesn't hinder my ingress/egress at all.

How tall are you? What seat do you have?

I'm 5'9 or so, 170 lbs, using a Sparco EVO, fixed mounted on the floor.

Well, I am pretty fat with short legs, so it does make it easier to get in/out and do up harness with the wheel out of the way.

I can get in/out with the wheel flipped down, but it interferes with my technique of grabbing the sides of the seat with both hands and swinging my legs in/out of the FD.

How much getting the steering wheel out of the way helps depends on the seat/safety equipment as well.

I chose the Bride Vios III Japan which has a low side bolster so its easier to get in/out of. If I would have chosen the Vios III R wit taller sides or heaven forbid the Maxis III with halo as well (and probably a roll bar or cage) it would add to the challenge of getting in/out.
