steering column mounted gauge pod

hello all,
question for you, who makes the best (most stock, and least invasive) boost gauge pod for the steering column?
I'm not looking to glue or drill, just snap out the old and snap in the new.
also, i assume the old doesnt get damaged and can easily be put back on?

thanks so much,
eric

No such part with all that criteria.

I don't know of one that simply "snaps" into place like the original cover. The older RE-A one might, but it's made for RHD cars so it requires some modifications to work. The RX-7 Store one doesn't require those types of modifications, but you have to find your own way to fasten it down (and it will require breaking the little tabs that the original cover used to snap down on).

I've heard that the RE cover works great, you just need to notch out the right side for the wiper controls, as the controls are on the left side on the Japan cars. And as far as I know, it snaps in place just like the original one.

You might bug Jason at the RX7Store and see if he can still get them. I know he can get more items than what's on the website, so I'm sure he can help you out.

A couple years ago I got in on a RX7 Club GP for a Pettit column gauge pod (just the pod - no gauge) for about $65. It replaces the factory part directly and is held on only with black silicone, which is easily removed. You don't have to break any tabs or damage the car in any way to mount it, but I did have to Dremel the pod's edges and gauge opening to improve the fit.

Yea.. I thought Pettit had one that snaps into the top half of the steering column. I use to have one. Just unscew and pull the two apart then snap the Pettit one onto the stock bottom end and screw her down.

anyone got a pic of the pettit one? is it a replica of the RE pod or is there only one style possible. I mean the way it tilts toward you, etc.

Not a good pic I know, but it's the best I've got. It came with the car but I was told once that it was a Petitt. I'd stand corrected. And I've had it off several times for one reason or another. Just a bit of silicone adhesive and it stays put. No busting tabs.

The only steering column pod that comes with the tabs is the RE from Japan. All the others are knock offs of that one but you still have to fasten it and remove the stock tabs.

My car originally came with the "Pettit Racing-Autometer" guage in the pod. That's another reason why I'm fairly certain that the pod came from them as well.
Off topic: From searching here on the forum I decided on the DEFI guages, at least for my relatively stock car. Very happy, especially at night. You have to look twice to see any difference btwn DEFI and OEM guages.

The RE Amemiya pod does snap onto the tabs and does not need any additional adhesive. However, you do have to trim it to clear the stock turn signal stalk, and it costs >$200.

I hope you already have a Defi boost gauge or located a good condition used one... it is now a discontinued item.

Wasn't aware of that. At least for now, here are a couple of sources:

yep. I do. I am moving it off the a-pillar. i have decided to do the AC controls relocation to the shifter panel, I am going to install the boost and temp(Defi D) in the ac location, I will put the Innovate AFR XD-1 in the single a-pillar pod. I don't like the two pod and the three is rediculous. I do like the idea of having boost right in front of the tach. no taking eyes away from cluster when monitoring shift points and boost. That I think is awesome. So I might do the boost in a steering pod and the XD-1 and water temp in the ac panel. I already started the fabrication of the ac relocation. I will then wrap everything in Carbon Fiber and it will look amazing. Fully custom and a little unique. That's the way its gotta go down.
